    Hello,
Just call me Queen Edema. I have regular edema and pretibial myxedema. I haven’t worn anything but flip flops on my feet in almost two years. I am not sure what causes it.I do know that the last Endo I went to discovered that the blood pressure meds that I was taking was not compatible with my PTU; and I was having bad swelling.

Now, I take Metalozone 2.5mg. It’s a diuretic. I hear it’s pretty strong. Because I don’t have a consistent doctor I only take it every other day. But, I can really tell the difference. I could actually wear heels to an appt. and keep them on the whole time!

I hope they get it under control for you, because I know at times mine gets painful.

Thanks! I think on my next visit in a couple of weeks I will ask the doc about a diuretic – definitely painful at times esp since I have arthritis in one ankle due to an old injury so the pressure just makes it throb. no fun getting older!

has anyone experienced leg and feet swelling? I have been having problems with edema since all of the symptoms for GD started and for the past couple of weeks my feet and ankles are so swollen. I am taking PTU 100mg 2x/day – I don’t think it is a side effect of the medication. the only thing that helps the swelling is of course no shoes and keeping them elevated. Will this ever subside?

    Hey Imr,

I was on PTU a few years back and am back on it as the carbimazole was lowering my WBC, on both these occasions I have experienced fluid retention and if you check the leaflet which comes with the meds – that is one of the side effects. My endo is unduly concerned but told me just to keep an eye on it to ensure it doesn’t worsen suddenly.

I would def recommend you liase with your endo at your next appointment.

I had a little edema in one foot the first go-round. I was told that’s common and that the Atenonol (sp?) would take care of the water retention. It did, within a week. I still swell like gangbusters during that time of the month … and I never had problems with water retention before. Now, it’s quite obvious for a couple of days "before."
