For those of you gathering info. on various treatments for Graves’, there’s an interesting article entitled, “Surgery Found Superior to Other Major Therapies for Graves’ Disease” on Medscape. You have to register to use Medscape, but it’s free.

Among other interesting facts, the Swedish researchers state that “‘young adult’ patients… and ‘old-adult patients’ who underwent hyperthyroid surgery had a 3% and 8% risk of relapse, respectively.”

“By comparison, treatment with antithyroid drugs…carried a 42% and 34% risk of relapse…” “Treatment with radioactive iodine (I131)… was associated with a 21% risk of relapse”.

There is also discussion of the related ophthalmopathy risks.

Don’t count on it. I had surgery when I was 12 and a separate GD crisis
and resulting surgery when I was 22. Ten years later! And my grandfather
had 5 thyroidectomies. The Guiness Book of Records?

    Repeating my earlier questions:

Has anyone out there had surgery and if so, how did it go? Did it take long to recover? Was it difficult to get regulated on synthetic hormones? Was there weight gain? Any problem from the insurance company on surgery rather than RAI?

    Thanks,
    Elaine
