    Hi, Ashley:

I’m not sure there are too many folks posting here these days who opted for surgery — I’ve been watching to see if anyone would answer your question, but …..

You might want to go into the archived posts, and type in surgery, and see if you can find the many posts there where people talked about their surgery experiences. I have seen posts over the years that address your question.

I did not have my thyroid removed surgically, so I cannot give you specifics, like you want. But I do wish you good luck,

    Hi Ashley, <img decoding=” title=”Smile” />

I had my thyroid removed in July – it is the best thing that has happened to me health wise. Have you been for a pre-assesment? If not yet try and write down any questions you have and ask the nurse or surgeon. If you are feeling exceptionally nervous in the build up or on the actual day as for a pre-op sedative to calm you down a little. I don’t want to go too deep into my situation as I think others stories may make you more anxious and you could have a completely different surgery and recovery. However, if you want to ask specific questions then I will answer honestly <img decoding=” title=”Very Happy” /> <img decoding=” title=”Very Happy” />

Initially after the op it felt strange but then that is to be expected after major surgery. I am sure everyone will have a different experience from myself though. I was able to drink small sips and eat ice cream after 24 hours and I was on a soft diet for a few days. I stayed in hospital for 4 days. I wasn’t allowed to lift for 6 weeks (which was very hard as I have 2 small children) and had limited movement. However, everything started to fall into place after a little while and I started to feel the benefit of not having a thyroid. I was prescirbed thyroxine straight away – however be prepared for it to take sometime to kick in and also for them to get the right dose- I am still waiting (impatiently  ).

My scar is healing nicely some days it becomes more red than others, however it is a very small neat scar and to be honest the thought of a scar never bothered me as my sis had the op and I was able to witness how well she healed.

Feel free to ask any questions but as I said I don’t want to bombard you with info that perhaps wouldn’t be beneficial and mayhaps make you more anxious.

Trust your surgeon and aneathetist – this is a routine op for them! xxxxx

    Hi Ashley!

I had my thyroid removed on 8/18. I’ve never felt better. Recovery was not to bad. The day of surgery and after was uncomfortable, but it was managable. The biggest headache for me was having limited movement of my neck for about 1 1/2 weeks. Looking in you blind spot while driving wasn’t possible for me. I also did a week of a softer diet. Swallowing felt really different for me, and sometimes still does. I have about a two inch scar on my neck that is healing nicely, still red on some days. I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any questions. you can also email me at nmasay(at)hotmail.com. Good luck! Keep us updated.
