I got the e-mail tonight, and the dates for the next support group leader training are Friday, Saturday and Sunday – February 26-28, 2009. Place: Brevard, North Carolina. Cost: FREE. Hotel rooms, meals and all conference materials are covered. There is space for a total of 16 people, two to a room. Transportation is your expense.
Requirements: You have to be a member of the Graves’ Disease Foundation, and have to have completed the application process. Some people "need" a support group, while others are in a better position to "lead" a support group. It is best if you have had Graves’ for a while, and have been through your own treatment process. If you are still new to Graves’, you can certainly help with a support group.
Send me an e-mail: "nancyngdf@bellsouth.net" and I will send you the paperwork.
The purpose of a support group is to SUPPORT, listen and encourage. W.A.N.D. We Are Not Doctors – ever!
Brevard is near Asheville, NC, off I-26. The area is known as Western North Carolina. This will be the 6th year we have had training here. I promise you will learn a lot, be dead tired when you finish, and make good friends (who will become part of YOUR support group) in the process.
This is a great opportunity for those within the driving area. It is a day’s drive from Florida, Ohio, Kentucky and Pennsylvannia. There is a small airport (AVL), and prices may be rather reasonable if you make reservations now. We can arrange pickup and return. We start last afternoon on Friday, and finish up before noon on Sunday.Could you tell me what airport I would have to book my flight to.
ElaineNancy,
OH OH I wish I was closer. I’m in Michigan, and really want to go! It’s sounds awesome! Could you tell me if there will ever be any in Michigan because I will save every penny to attend. Thanks!Elaine, I’ll answer for Nancy in case she doesn’t see it very soon. Book your flight to Asheville, NC. It’s a nice little airport. I was there last year. Someone can pick you up and take you to the hotel, just talk to Nancy about what time your flight is coming in when you get it booked.
Glad to see you on the board!
Dianne
Hi Nancy – If you ever bring the training program to the Western U.S., I would definitely have an interest in attending! I’ve got a project for work that will probably take the whole month of February, so it would be tough to get the time off. Of course, we have one more round of layoffs to go before the end of the quarter, so if that happens, I might see you in Asheville after all… ” title=”Wink” />
Also, I don’t know if this is true, but I read on another board that if you post your e-mail on a public forum, you should use the form: address (at) provider (dot) net. This supposedly keeps spammers from picking up your e-mail by trolling public forums. If you aren’t having any issues with spam, please feel free to ignore.
If anyone ever wants to come to support group training, please make sure I have contact information: Name, address, phone and e-mail. I am not having trouble with spammers, so you can e-mail me at nancyngdf@bellsouth.net.
Nancy – As soon as I finish my post masters in Dec 2010, you can count me in. By then, I should be stable with thyroid and have enough time to give this attention. For my tenure, I do need to be actively involved in a National Organization. Are there small roles that need doing that do not require a lot of time or training that I could start with? I would love to have this be with NGDF. Let me know.
Thanks! ” title=”Very Happy” />
Hello, my son Steven has TED & had decompression surgery on 1/5/09. I think he would benefit joining a support group. He currently resides in Avondale, AZ. He is attending school there, but he’s originally from San Diego. I’m also interested in joining a support group so I know in what ways I can help my son. Where can I find the list of where & when the different groups meet, etc.? I actually just signed up as a member of GDF today. I appreciate all your help & God bless you all!
