Thank you for your post. I’m new here (not new to Graves’ Disease) and seriously considering surgery since I’ve never been able to achieve remission after 7 years on anti-thyroid drugs. Over time the ups and downs of changes in labs have worn thin. Glad to hear your experience after day 1 was a good one. Please continue to post updates on how you’re doing over the days/weeks to come. My appointment with the surgeon isn’t until 8/14/12, (hard to get an appointment) but I want this surgeon based on experience and track record, so I’m willing to wait. Thanks again, best to you!

    Hi Severage,

7 years- wow! You have a lot of patience! Today (4th day after surgery), I’m doing pretty well. Voice is maybe a tad stronger, not sure- but it works! I went for a walk around the block today with my mom, husband & baby. I still get the “woozy” feeling I’ve had through out my Graves journey. Kind of a being on a sail boat feeling/ floatie sensation that comes and goes. Every other hyper symptom is gone though, and that is a big relief. I get to sleep in my bed tonight instead of the recliner, so that will be nice too. I’m down to taking 2 Advil when I need it. I’ve taken it once today so far and don’t feel too badly. My mom tells me what everyone else always says here— that I’ve been sick for awhile (6 months) and getting strong again and everything normalized will take time. Good luck to you and meeting with the surgeon. It is wise to wait for the right surgeon; it makes a world of difference in feeling confident & in the outcome.

So glad you’re doing well! Sorry, I haven’t been here lately, started PT for the shoulder and feel pretty rough. Lots of love and good vibes for a rapid recovery!

Thank you ncpatches! :) I hope your shoulder heals completely. How is your thyroid treating you? Today is day 6 after surgery and I’m starting to feel better! I can honestly say that I feel better now than I did before surgery. Not 100%, but I think I’m on the road to recovery and being myself again- very exciting! I’m going to continue taking it slowly to recuperate, but I’m starting to see that light- that hope that I will be “me” again and that there are glimpses of the old me coming back. YAY!

I found the less I corrected my kids that first week, the better I felt. And I think they enjoyed that week the most!

Haha! Funny! Yes, I’ve learned to talk, but to stop when I get tired or sore. My voice is coming back a little stronger each day. I’m finding that I’m finally able to talk from “down lower” in my throat than at first (where I was more talking from the top of throat/ voice if that makes sense). So, I can tell there are improvements. I’m one week post- op. today.

I read one book to my 4 year old, but couldn’t read another as it made my throat hurt and feel tight. :( So hard to be patient with this recuperating business. I did go out to Barnes & Noble with the family today though and had sushi for lunch! Yummy!

Thanks, Shirley :) Each day is better. I only take Advil twice a day now- not too bad. Synthroid seems to be doing it’s thing. I’ll get my blood done next Friday. We go back home on Wednesday. I’m going to miss my parents and being here; it’s been nice. We haven’t been out here to CT for 2 years. Last time I was here during the summer was about 8 years ago- so it’s been a nice visit.

Take it easy with your voice! You don’t want someone to tell you to be on voice rest! Think of it as your vocal cords need just a bit more time to get back to baseline.
I guess I sound like your mom!
    Glad you enjoyed the sushi.
We have plenty of good sushi in Seattle

    Alexis,
So glad you are doing better. Thank you for helping me with my questions this last two days. Your story gives me hope :)

Did the Dr. remove all of your thyroid?

Is TSI a concern in your case?

I’m asking because my TSI was high and if I understand it correctly, if I have my thyroid removed, the TSI will still be there bothering me with something else (eyes, skin … etc.?).

Are all of the GD symptoms gone? You mentioned that you were still feeling some of the effects.

Is Synthroid all you have to take to get what you need that your thyroid used to provide?

I’m kind of scared of being without a thyroid :/ but I haven’t researched it much.

Wow … 4 boys. Congrats!! Sushi … mmmmm. I had that a few days ago. I don’t know if I should anymore though. I think I read that contains iodine.

Yes …. it is Versed … makes patients forget :) and get relaxed.

Why did you have surgery in CT and not where you live? Just wondering? Better Dr.?

    Glad you are recuperating.

    Caro :)
