Hi again. Question: I had a fellow Graves contact once whose doc had her taking different strengths every other day. For example, a .75 one day, the a .5 the next in order to get at an in between dose. Anyone else had this experience or heard of it. That was the only case I’d heard of.

Because the replacement hormone stays biologically active in the body for so long, it is possible to take different doses on different days, and "split the difference." The problem with that is that it adds another layer of complication to the process, so I suspect our doctors prefer to find out first if one of the standard doses works as well.

I think it would be really helpful if the thyroid replacement drugs were available in more strengths than they are. For me, I think that I would benefit from a dose that is in between 1 and 112. That is a pretty big spread when you consider that we are concerned about the generics giving us a couple micrograms too much or too little. For me, the 112 runs me a little high with some hyper symptoms but on the 1 I get some hypo symptoms. Because there definitely is concern about getting "the right amount" of replacement I think that I and likely lots of us would benefit with better "fits" of medication. I am going to call the drug companies with this request – can’t hurt to try. I would appreciate others’ thoughts on this.

There’s another option too ~ I believe if you can find a compounding pharmacy (one that does their own "pill making"), you can dial in doses at smaller increments. The doctors would certainly prefer finding us a "regular," commonly-available dose, but if that fails, there are several options, including taking two doses on alternating days. My doctor suggested I take half a pill on Sundays only, and that works for me.
