Kimberly do you have a reference for info regarding what is ok with soy and what isn’t when taking Synthroid for GD? DX 2/21/12; RAI 2/24/12; currently on Synthroid 150 mcg (only been taking it 2 weeks – it may increase eventually once I have my next set of labs – just beginning the process).

I have read several things that soy interferes with Synthroid? Specifically I want to go on Medifast diet which is made primarly of soy protein (because I have to lose some pretty significant weight in order to have kidney stone lithotripsy/”blasting” procedure) . Also, I take Fish Oil and CoQ10 for other issues which both contain soy and not sure if they are ok to continue (and having trouble finding these supplements soy-free).

You always have links to great resources, so I thought maybe you had something on this subject for me and/or any other documented info from others?

    Thanks

Hello – Here’s some info from the ATA on thyroid hormone replacement:

(Note on links: if you click directly on the following links, you will need to use your browser’s “back” button to return to the boards after viewing. As an alternative, you can right-click the link and open it in a new tab or new window).

    http://www.thyroid.org/patients/patient_brochures/hormonetreatment.html

Soy is mentioned as one of the substances that can potentially affect the absorption of thyroid hormone replacement. This document doesn’t mention a specific time frame, but in general I hear that it’s a good idea to separate the replacement from soy, calcium, etc. by 4 hours.

    Hope this helps!
