You’re so strong and you hardly even KNOW it, do you? <img decoding=” title=”Very Happy” />

I just got finished reading your lovely, supportive post to another, describing all you’ve been through and how you’ve come through it so well ~ and whoops, here you are in a panic! I do understand ~ advising another isn’t nearly the same as anticipating your own treatment ~ but I hope you see what I mean.

Others who have been through the surgery will have to answer your more specific questions, but I can tell you that for the most part, I’ve only seen posts with the happy "wow, that was much easier than I thought!" I hope that helps some. Swallowing should not be affected, since they don’t do anything with the swallowing structures (they’re working in front of them), and actually, getting the thyroid out of the way might actually relieve some swallowing issues you’ve had from the goiter. I’ve not heard of anyone saying their swallowing was affected, or that they’ve had internal bleeding afterward. Of course, as you know, that doesn’t mean it can’t happen, or has never happened. (Oh, big help I am!)

It’s wise to be looking at the advantages, rather than the "what-if" worst scenario kind of thing. Have faith in your surgeon, have a nice long consult with them to allay your fears.

BREATHE! DEEP! <img decoding=” title=”Very Happy” />
and again, slowly.

Hey M…
I GET your anxiety – I would be right there with you. My cousin (38 yrs. old) had a total hysterectomy today. She’s always has had "female" problems. She’s been a nervous wreck this past week as well. It’s so easy for those of us who are not undergoing surgery to say "look at the stats, everything will be fine." But it doesn’t help the way YOU FEEL. Because rationally you know that the overwhelming liklihood is that everything will be fine and you’ll live a happy (happier?) thyroid-free life. But getting there is the hard part. I’m continuning to pray for your recovery but also for anxiety to lessen. BTW, my cousin is fine following her surgery.

I agree that it’s a good idea to focus on the positive, because what other choice do you have? Keep a list of the positive outcomes where you can see it and look at it/add to it all the time.

I wish I had the cure for anxiety….you’d be the first person I’d share it with.

I saw a friend today that I haven’t seen since before I got sick. We certainly had alot to catch up on. I was telling her some of the "good?" things that have come out of GD: no more caffeine/aspartame, learning to let (some) things go – really, enjoying more moments in the present, and making some new cyber-friends.

Hang in there, my friend,
Emily

Ok the time is getting closer and I am becoming so anxious about the operation. How on earth am I going to be able to get into that hospital the day before ?? What if something goes wrong?

Those of you who have had the op could you swallow after it? My sis has ran through it with me loads of times but I just can’t take any of it in I am so scared. Did anyone have to be taken back to theatre because of internal bleeding?
I am sorry to be such a pain I am a very nervous person anyway but I just want to cry when I think about going under the knife.
I have been trying to bury my head in the sand but I am struggling now.

I have made a list in my head as to how the op will improve my life:
1) I will never have another TS – thank God!
2) I will hopefully start to feel better and be well for my little boys
3)My miscarriage rate goes back to that of a normal woman
4) I won’t have this massive swelling my neck

Thanks for putting up with me.

hey all thanks so much

Ski you are so right – its easy to give advice but taking it? Well thats a different ball game! <img decoding=” title=”Very Happy” /> Its funny because I have been present at several orthopaedic operations and will tell my patients oh you will be fine etc.. yet I know that if I had ever to have a hip replacement I would be petrified lol!

Emily – you are so kind.. I know your prayers are being listened to as hey – look how far I have come! I have even booked a friend who has her own cleaning company to come in while I am in hospital and for a few months after until I get on my feet. Now that is forward thinking and taking the heat of myself. Before I would have been so embarrassed to ask for help around the house but I know I need it and I know that its not fair on the kids hearing me get agitated about the house and also not fair on me getting stressed!

Hopeful – your are so wise and I hope things are settling down at home? I do often think of all of you and I get my strength from you guys on here!

I must admit I have been perking myself up with Grey’s anatomy which I had never watched before but my friend is addicted to it and Patrick Dempsey    McDreamy is certainly helping me unwind at nights lol!!!!!

Thanks again

M – you will have some difficulty swallowing right after – your throat will be very sore. They had me eat what they called a "soft, cold" meal for lunch, and then I ate a regular supper (this was in the hospital). It hurt some, but it was very manageable. I had no problems with bleeding – I was out of the hospital in less than 24 hours.

It’s now been 8 weeks since my surgery, and I’m doing well. My eyes are still bothering me, but my body is feeling stronger every day. I know it will be the same for you. Be kind to yourself. Almost forgot to mention – my anxiety levels have also improved since my surgery! Yours will too, once that gland is gone.

Take care,

Karen

"M" you are so strong; you are so helpful to all of us with your great advice. I know that how scared you are; I feel that panic right now. I know you will be fine. There is a client that comes to our center she use-to-use Cocaine. She found our in March that she had a toxic goiter. She had it removed three days later. She is on medication, and told me that when she woke up the next day, she felt like a new person. The anxiety and panic was all gone. It took her about three weeks to really feel good. She is a shining example of success.

I wish you success with you surgery. Know that I am saying a pray that you wake the next day and feel like a new women.

Love from Mass

hyperm,
You said before that you have been present for an ortho surgery? I was wondering….you must be a nurse…is there a way you could speak with the Dr that is going to do your surgery and maybe sit in on a thyroid removal? Maybe that might help calm your fears?

Your in my prayers, Hugs Rhonda

I didn’t have thryoid surgery, but I know a number of people that have had it. They don’t report the problems that you are worrying about. Worry is a circular activity, it goes ’round and ’round. Keep building on the list of good things you are expecting, and make another list of questions for the surgeon. Fax them to him/her before the next time you see them. Go in and talk to the nurse. If I didn’t send you the article on surgery, send me an e-mail "nancyngdf@bellsouth.net", and I will attach it right back to you.

Thanks everyone! Its so heart warming to think that there is so many lovely people out there trying to reassure me!

I just have to think that I surely can’t feel any worse than I do now or especially after the TS! I am just so nervous and am scared. I think if I didn’t have the boys then I wouldn’t worry so much However, I have my pre-op on the 9th to check out my vocal cords etc… and then after that its only a matter of a week then I’m off!

Thanks so much for all your support. Rhonda I am an OT and on mat leave but I think if I went into see the op then I would most def NOT be going in myself lol! I think it may help others though who are not just as anxious as me.

There is a link in utube with a recording of surgery which I started to watch a few months back and had to put it it off!  Have any of you seen the young girl who had thyroid cancer – she has a massive scar! But if you watch any of her other videos she has the most fantastic voice!

Try not to worry so much. I’ve had multiple surgeries, some of them emergencies, and I came through OK. I have seizure disorder, and delivering my last child was weird! It will be all right. Trust in God, and your family. Think of it this way, You are going to have some time off, so enjoy it! You certainly must need it! Do what the doctor says, and take it easy. We will all be thinking of you. God Bless :ugeek:
