Just finished reading some of the info connection to smoking and Graves. One article stated possible connection when you stop. Sure mad e me think back. I first started having symtems (eyes only) about a month or so after I quit. I started after a year n half (yeh, dumb). I recently quit almost 4 wks ago and have been feeling some pressure and puffiness in my right eye (same one affected the most before). I can understand the metabolism and all but my thyroid has been normal?
Still baffels me, I don’t think there are many of us posting that have a normal tyroid reading? My heart just goes out to all of you. Take care

    Sue,

I think I will just continue to smoke. Seriously, I know I should quit,
and I know smoking can cause other problems, but isn’t it strange when you
quit(trying to hel yourself, and then symptoms occur.

    Take Care,
    Kitty

Oh great!!!! Can’t seem to win sometimes. Wouldn’t the tobacco companies love that piece of news. I can see the billboard now!!

I asked my endo if smoking exaserbated GD eye problems. He said there was no connection…no wonder…it’s when you quit. Aaaaaagh!!

Sandy, perhaps your endo isn’t aware of information linking smoking to Graves’ Disease and more frequent/severe eye involvement. I think this is an area that merits more serious research and study, as it doesn’t appear definitive information exists at this time. I’d really hate to see someone think he shouldn’t quit smoking because it might cause/exacerbate Graves’ eye involvement, when the reverse may well be true. Of course, if one wants to keep smoking, that’s as good an excuse as any other! (Been there, done that!) Though my Graves’ and the eye involvement started during the year after I quit smoking, perhaps it would have all been WORSE if I’d continued. This subject interest me, and I’d be interested in any credible information anyone finds and wants to share. Thanks!

I too recently found out that I had graves and sure enough I had quit smoking three months prior. It could be a coincidence but I would think not when you keep hearing the same thing form other people. I really have to wonder now why did I quit?? The health benefits from quiting haven’t really been all that great, considereing now I have Grave’s. Just wanted to vent , thanks for listening.

Six years ago when my graves got nasty, my gp said not to worry about trying to quit smoking. When the eyes went bonkers about 8 months later, the optho said smoking is bad for your eyes, you should quit. The gp said the stress from trying to quit wasn’t worth it. Bottom line – I still am hyper, have had the eye surgeries, eye radiation (twice), RAI and I don’t think smoking has made any difference. Even my gp says quitting would not be for the graves, but for a healthier life in general. I tell him when I can do more than “sit” I’ll consider quitting.

DianneN, Thanks, I needed to be reminded that I won’t go back to smoking. Who knows what my life would have been had I not picked up the nasty habit. I also had cervical cancer which is higher for smokers.
First got Graves in 91 with-in 2 months of quitting smokes. I started smoking after1 1/2 yrs. Now quit smoking almost 4 wks ago and just got back from Opthol. and my right eye is a little over 1mm enlarged. Coiencidence? don’t know but I prefer to be a non smoker.
