The reddish lumps on shins can possibly be pretibial myxedema — which is associated with Graves. PM is sometimes described as looking a bit like orange rinds. Some of us here have had it itch — others not. But the only way to know for sure would be to consult a dermatologist.

Thanks to all for your helpful feedback on swollen eyes. I have another symptom to share with you: a lumpy reddish thickening/bumps on my shins. I find the skin on my shins to be extremely itchy most of the time. Is this associated with Graves’ Disease or just pure coincidence? I developed bad allergies a few years ago (I suspect they too may be related to my Graves’) and mild asthma (which I suspect is also related to an over active immune system) and had skin testing recently only to find that I reacted to nearly every environmental and food trigger. The allergist finally concluded that the Graves’ is causing my body to be hypersensitive to everything, and probably will continue to do so until my thyroid levels regulate. The good news is the RAI finally worked – my thyroid levels were below normal and I just started a very low dose of synthroid. The rash/skin condition on my shins just developed after my RAI treatment. Any insights are appreciated!

Thanks for the response. Another doctor to add to my list. I”ll get it checked out since it makes me so uncomfortable.

    Hello!
Just to share my experience with you, I also developed a “mysterious” and miserable rash on my shins about 2 months after my RAI. It started out as a small itchy patch on my shins, and within a week grew into raised red welts that throbbed and itched. I had extensive allergy testing done which determined I had no detectable allergies. My doctors finally concluded (after much ado) that the rash was related to my changing thyroid levels. I was treated with steroids, but the rash did not fully go away until they started me on thyroid replacement.

Who knows, though. Everything about this disease is a mystery to me.

I hope you feel better soon,
    Elizabeth
