Hi All,
Is there any connection between hypothyroidism and your ability to fight an infection? I have been hypothyroid for a couple of months and my endo. is steadily decreasing my dosage of Tapazole. I’m currently on 5 mg daily.
I am currently on my second round of antibiotics to treat a sinus infection. I have been sick for about three weeks. I usually don’t catch much of anything other than a common cold. Before the sinus infection, the last time I ran a fever was over six years ago. Just wondering if there’s a connection…
Claire
Hi Claire, I really don’t know the answer to the hypo/sinus infection, but there are other factors that contribute to this, despite the fact you have been well for a long time. The first think I think of, which your doc may have already considered, is that the antibiotic he prescribed, is not specific for the bug you have. The second, is that your sinus infection could be viral, in which case, no antibiotic will make a bit of difference.
Be sure he knows you are having fevers, what they are, and time of day. If you are febrile, I am sure you feel crappy. And sinus infections are very draining on us. Keep your doc (and us!) posted on how you are doing.
Being hypo is very draining, also, as you know!
ShirleyClaire, I suffered from sinus infection after sinus infection for about a year. I finally had surgery but it wasn’t necessary. I later found out that THERE IS a link between being hyperthyroid and sinus infection, there may be a link between sinus infection and HYPO. You should definitely bring it up with your endo.
I have found that sinus infections and hyperthyroid and hypothyroid are a real bear to deal with while you are still adjusting your Meds. Each time I had an infection, we would end up with 2-3 courses of Meds to cure the infection. Now that I am finally close to my pre thyroid numbers I don’t see sinus infections.
Hello – I haven’t seen any research on this, but I have heard stories from patients who have noticed a link between sinus issues and eye involvement with Graves’.
If you are noticing any eye symptoms (dryness, bulging, double vision, grittiness, etc.), it would be helpful to get an evaluation done from an experienced ophthalmologist.
Take care!
