Light – I accidently posted this to Molly – what I get for multi-tasking
What an interesting question. I am not sure but it seems as if the voice hoarsness that can accompany hyperthyroid would resolve with treatment.
Welcome to the board.
Hi I’m new. I’m 17 and I was just diagnosed with Graves’ Disease less than 3 weeks ago. It was great to finally have answers to why I was having so many problems, but my biggest concern is my voice. I’m a singer and I hope to pursue a career in music some day. I have been taking PTU and Beta Blockers and have seen a little improvement in my voice so far. Are any of you singers? Has your voice improved drastically or only a little? Is there hope for me in a music career? Ah I’m so full of questions!!! I know my thyroid is 3x the size it should be as it shrinks should my voice become less hoarse? This is all so new to me haha.
As your thyroid returns to its regular size, your voice should return ~ it just takes a little while. For the record, I would point out that if the meds are not a successful treatment for you and you need to investigate one of the other two available treatments, someone with a career in singing would usually prefer RAI over surgery. Surgical complications are rare, but if your vocal cords are your stock in trade, you wouldn’t want to risk them at all. Even a less than 1% risk would be too high, if you were that 1%.
Hi, I was diagnosed with Graves 6 weeks ago. I am 13 and also a singer. I hope for a career in musical theatre one day. I have been on beta blockers and carbimozole for 6 weeks and am also on 40 mg of steroids a day (for thyroid eye disease). Only tonight I was singing and have noticed that when I am, it feels like something is in my throat and I can’t sing properly anymore. My goitre has gone and I am no longer breathless when I sing, just doesn’t feel right. I know how you feel.
Funny you should mention this — about six weeks before I was diagnosed, I was singing along to the radio and somehow I wasn’t cutting it singing to one of my favorite songs. I was wondering what was going on. I didn’t give it much thought back then.” title=”Sad” />
I’m 8+ months post diagnosis and my singing voice is coming back, but slowly.
