I had RAI about 13 years ago and have been on synthroid and generally stable for years. My med levels rarely change except for weird little tweaks one every couple of years.

When i was SEVERELY HYPER before RAI, i was very ill, and then after RAI I had Thyroid Eye disease, and other issues, severe hypo and aches pains weight gain etc……. All of that resolved and I am finally almost pre-RAI weight.

Strange thing is, my shins have been extremely itchy (like eczema) and i have a large patch covering my entire left shin of what looks like typical graves skin shin rash. My right is also itchy and slightly rashy, but my left is raised, slightly textured and very itchy and dry. Is it possible for the shin skin rash to appear at any time? Even when thyroid levels are “Normal” and thyroid eye disease has gone into remission, things have been stable?

I never had this skin problem—had almost every OTHER symptom in the book, but this is new. Any info on if this graves’ related rash can occur at any time, or if this is just a very coincidental patch of eczema. I have an appointment with my endo and probably will then get one with my dermatologist.

    Thanks for any insights!

Hello – There is a condition related to Graves’ called pretibial myxedema. It shows up as a red rash on the skin that has a somewhat “pitted” texture, like an orange peel. PM can come with swelling as well.

Your dermatologist will be the best person to determine whether you are dealing with just a standard bout of eczema, PM, or something else. (And then help you with treatment options).
