Hi Katy – Warm, humid air is always good. Turn on the heat and the
humidifier! – FBKaty have you tried Moisturel? It is a very good
lotion and doesn’t cause irritation.Hi, Katy:
I’ve been there, although the main areas of real problem for me involved places where clothing rubbed. Anyway, I’ve taken to frequent baths in Alpha Keri oil, which has helped a lot. The other thought that comes to mind is to find a product like udder cream. It was developed for dairy cows (no fooling) and has a good quantity of lanolin in it. I find it at needlepoint or quilting shops. It does a terrific job.
Good luck.

For a long time I couldn’t figure out why my doc was so concerned about how my skin was. He kept saying to use lots of lotion. So…I wasn’t real surprised when the dry skin hit. What did surprise me was my dry scalp. It itches so much it hurts. Doc says dry skin is from meds (PTU) and I have been taking it for almost 5 years now. My skin went dry after my RAI so am somewhat sceptical about the PTU bit. Maybe it is a combination. Anyway the doc prescribed a shampoo which you rub into your scalp and let stand for 10 minutes before rinsing out. It tooks literally months, but it is helping. For the skin he said to mix benedryl cream half and half with skin lotion. My skin while very dry does not bother me as much as my scalp. I really slather the lotion on. When my arms were so itchy I couldn’t stand it, I used facial moisturer on them and that helped more than regular lotion (even with the benedryl). At least it doesn’t mean anything awful is happening. Good luck.
I tried a variety of lotions, etc for the “lizard skin” (cracking, burning, itching, …ad nauseum). Out of absolute frustration I decided to try an approach from the inside out. I started taking Evening Primrose Oil (from the health food store) and vitamin E. The Evening Primrose Oil is a gamma linoleic acid (GLA) nutrient which is supposed to be one of the “building blocks” of nutrition.
I’ve been taking it for 6 months now without any negative effects and it does help the dryness. Also, (I’m not sure why) it helped my PMS hormone swings also.Clearly I’m no chemist. I have no clue HOW it works, I just know it helped me along with Vitamin E.
BTW –I found a wonderful lotion that I was using on my legs and upper arms. It was a miracle. However, it had lidocaine in it (which just numbed the skin). I found out (the hard way) that the lidocaine was a BIG no-no for my heart.
Hope this helps someone.

Good Day All,
Does anyone else have this severe dry itchy skin? noticed
on my face these past few days that my skin is severly dry and
itchy. It only affects my face, eyelids and hands. Anyone else have
this?? I always use a moisturizer after getting out of the shower
and this stopped working for me. I have a prescription moisturizer
Lac-Hydrin and this is not working now. Any other suggestions? Thanks— Katy
Yes ma’am – itchy skin, which is common with graves, really cannot be addressed with moisturizers alone. My dermatologist prescribed a moisturizer with cortizone and I also took antihystamines. As far as dry skin, funny you should ask. I recently went to one of those “make-up” parties (that’s makup not make out ha ha), and the woman put a mask on my face. She couldn’t believe that after it was applied, my skin absorbed all of the moisture to the point that it didn’t look like I had a mask on. I suggest a very strong moisturizing facal cream ’cause you’ll probably need it.
