It’s a strange disease — I went hypo shortly after RAI, only to go back into the normal zone briefly, before heading back into hypo territory. I kept getting hyper on smaller and smaller doses of the replacement hormone, until my endo took me completely off. That didn’t last long, and I gradually needed more replacement over time.
It helped that all I had to do was tinker with my dose of replacement — I didn’t have to redo RAI. Ski did, however, and she may add her thoughts to you at some point in time.
Keep your chin up, and we’ll hold you in our (positive) thoughts!
Well, Thank you!
My levels were down to the low normal then have been steadily creeping up .02 a month (whatever that means). I was on synthroid for a few months and even after they took me off for a little over a month, it still rose and my heart rate had returned to well over 100 resting. I’m just ready to get through with this part and get on a routine to lose this weight.
I go in the morning for my second round of RAI. I had treatment the first time in January of this year (2010), my levels went down to a normal level then have slowly crept back up to the higher of the normal range. I’m so frustrated and thought I was on the downhill side of this months ago, only to start feeling hyper again. Anyone else had to do this a second time? I was just curious to hear any stories.
Thanks,
MichelleGood luck with the second RAI. I’ll be crossing my fingers for this one to really work all the way for you.

Thank you!! ” title=”Very Happy” />
I did indeed need two doses, and went *fully* hypo shortly after the second dose (and I waited longer between the two than you have, JUST to be sure my body wouldn’t "finish" with the thyroid on its own). I was so glad when I finally reached healthy levels, I had been convincing myself that I wasn’t really "that bad," but after I got to normal, I could see how unhealthy I was, even being just a little bit off.
The only thing I think people ought to know is that the second dose typically needs to be much larger, not because you’re trying to conclusively destroy it, really, but because the first dose does destroy quite a bit of thyroid tissue, which means your iodine uptake will be far lower than it was. That means you have to take more in the second dose in order to get enough into the thyroid to do the work. The only difference between the two is that you have more of it flushing out of your body in the first two days. After that, what remains is typically about the same amount each time. Let us know how it’s going for you!!
My second dose was 15 compared to my initial dose of 10. For the first time in over 2 years, I’m actually cold in my house instead of freezing my kids out because I’m hot!! I think that’s a good sign! I’m pretty tired all of the time but just started working and have to be at work bright and early. I haven’t attempted to sleep without ambien yet but am tempted. I still wake up some and don’t want to chance not getting sleep. Thanks for the words of encouragement everyone!!
