I see your point to having the surgery. You don’t have to wait the 2-6 months to go hypo then on replacement, as you would with RAI. I guess it would quicken the process for you so you can start a family:) I already have 3 boys, so I never had to think about that. I’m on the other side and don’t desire anymore…hahahaha
One thing to think about though. (Not trying to change your mind) If you are having the surgery to hopefully speed up the process of future pregnancy, keep in mind that it may not. When you are hyper, it can be very difficult to get pregnant. It is possible, but very difficult. Also, the same for hypo. When your body conceives it requires a perfect combination of factors: hormones, temperture, normal ovulation (which does not happen at times with thyroid issues), etc.
Once you have the surgery, you will start your replacement. It may take months for your body to adjust to a normal state. Potentially…the same amount of time that if would have with RAI. I guess you just have to do the math. If you got pregnant 2 months earlier than you would if you had RAI…is it worth surgery? If it is worth it to you, then go for it.
Either way, you are finally on your way to feeling better. I hope that you find the right replacement dose and move on with life and have those babies:) keep us posted!
You did a great job making your decision. I had the surgery, was extremely happy that I did it. I was 24 at that time, got pregnant just when we planned, a few months later. All good.
Thank you. I definately feel more comfortable with my decision. I actually was at the hospital where the procedure is being done and was talking to a nurse who works on the floor where I will be spending the nite. She knew exactly who my surgeon was and said that he is one of the best and she sees thyroidectomy patients every other week. All that made me feel so much better! She said no worries about the general anesthesia very common because Im freaked out about that. She said most people freak a bit over the drain on the neck which is common. I kinda got some flack from a friend who had the RAI and she couldn’t get over the fact why I wouldnt do that, years ago when this started I probably would of. Now with my eyes the way they are and I hate feeling anxious this is the best decision.
