I forgot to ask my endocrinologist this question when I saw him on Friday. I plan to call him tomorrow, but figured I’d check here to see if anyone has experienced this…

Has anyone experienced extreme scalp sweating? Since my Graves diagnosis in February 2010, combined with being a New Englander now living in Southwest Florida, I’ve been sweaty for the past few years. I sweat just walking my dog at 6am, so you can imagine how sweaty I get doing any sort of outdoor activity or even working out in an air-conditioned gym.

However, lately I’ve experienced extremely sweaty scalp. I have long, thick hair, but I always have. It’s only in the past few months that I’ve actually been able to blot a tissue with the sweat on my scalp. It’s gross, and especially embarrassing as a young female. It even starts to smell – at least to me. Others have not noticed it, and I have asked close friends to be honest with me. I’m guessing only I can smell it because my nose is mere inches from the source. I wash my hair at least once a day (whereas I really don’t need to because I have such dry hair), sometimes twice, simply because my scalp is so sweaty that it makes my roots look greasy. I know I have some weight to lose since becoming hypo, and I could eat a better diet than I currently am, but I can’t attribute a few extra pounds and some processed food in my diet to such extreme scalp sweat. My entire head sweats, and it’s most noticeable along my hairline. My face also sweats, whether or not I am wearing makeup or any sort of moisturizer. I got out of the shower last night, put absolutely nothing on my face, and went outside to replace my windshield wipers. After 5 minutes (at 7pm), my face was drenched and my scalp was as wet as when I stepped out of the shower. The rest of my body was a bit sweaty, but nothing like my head.

I tried washing my scalp with Dial antibacterial liquid soap before I shampoo and condition, but that doesn’t seem to help and only makes my head smell like antibacterial soap when it starts to sweat, which is no more appealing than the "sweaty smell."

Hello – Hopefully, you will get some other responses…definitely let us know what you find out. I’ve experienced this on rare occasions, but assumed it was a hot flash! Ah, the challenge of sorting out the Graves’ stuff from all of our other life’s issues! <img decoding=” title=”Wink” />
