Sorry for what’s probably a trivial question and a trivial worry, but the anxiety is bad today so I took a mild tranquilizer a few hours ago. I now notice that my heart rate is high (95-100) so I’ m thinking about taking one of my 10 mg. beta blockers (from my hyper days) but thanks to the anxiety, I’m nervous about doing it.

I’m 99% positive that it’s fine to take a tranq and a beta blocker but thought I’d get other opinions first. Since I no longer have a thyroid, does that make a difference? Will I put myself into a coma or something?

Thank goodness I’m seeing my surgeon tomorrow – I will definitely ask her, but I’m hoping to take one soon…. this heart rate is scaring me.

I hope the tranquilizer helped… Not having a thyroid shouldn’t affect whether you take a beta blocker…something has your heart rate up and they help lower it to protect your heart. I hope you’re feeling better.

    PS. I’m not a doc…just my opinion.

I had a few days of raised heart rate after TT. I almost took a BB but just rode it out. Told myself if it got higher or lasted longer I would take one and call my doc.

Hi Sue, sorry you are having anxiety and fast heart rate today…my guess is the bb is okay, might help the anxiety too. My doctor once told it blocks the effect of adrenaline and anxiety is probably amping that up. I’ve actually used beta blockers in the past as a tranquilizer, works pretty well. I keep meaning to post to thank you for your TT thread, you are helping so many who may follow in your footsteps soon enough!

Thanks, Ladies…. as usual…. just what I needed to hear. I did break down and take one (10 mg Propranolol) at 8:30 pm and started feeling a lot better shortly thereafter. I just get nervous taking them because often when my heart rate is fast my BP is LOW and I am afraid to lower it even more. But I’m still conscious so it’s all good.

Thanks for the replies. (and Raspberry – you’re welcome. Being able to read other’s journals has saved my sanity so I’m just trying to return the favor).

late response, but I asked my doc about taking the bb and sleeping pills and was told it was OK so I am assuming it was also fine for you…

Nope, not a late response. Today I left 6 hours between the mild tranq and the low dose BB. If I’m feeling the same way tomorrow I may want to take them both at the same time.

Thank you for letting me know….. I need to stop worrying so much and take the pills I’ve been given to help me through this. I’ve been white-knuckling for a lifetime… maybe it’s time to cut myself a break.

Just a reminder that this is a great place for us to share experiences, but ultimately, the only person who can tell you if a particular combination of meds is “safe” is your own doctor! We all have Graves’ in common, but different underlying conditions and different supplementation/medication regimens, which can make a difference.

Hope the appointment today goes well!
