Just wondering if anyone knows whether your risk of thyroid storm goes up after RAI? I have gone more hyper with my numbers than I ever was before I had RAI and I am not on any ATDs right now because of the rash that developed a few weeks ago. I need to make a decision about whether to try and go back on some ATD again. I am not feeling great but am coping. I also don’t want to do anything contrary to having the radiation do it’s thing.

    Thanks,

    Ewmb,
Yes, you do have a ‘higher’ chance for TS but my endo said its usually when the dumping starts. He told me to watch for MAJOR changes within my first like few days to three weeks. I was at thee lowest tsh and highest free t3 and t4 when I did RAI. The radiologist wanted to push if off but couldnt cause I didn’t respond to the ATDs. I took a chance and luckily I didn’t go in TS..I didn’t really experience excessive symptoms until week 5-6. I had an awful time then. I was a shaking, tremory, weak, heart racing MESS. I was certian I was doomed but then it just got easier. It really just depends (i think) on your dose, how much thyroid hormone your thyroid had stored, your body’s response etc. Stay strong and keep hope. It will get easier. It’s frustrating I know, but at least your on your way to a healthier life. I wish you the best of luck. Please keep us updated and call your Primary, Endo, or local ER if you feel worse. Thats what they are there for. I have you in my prayers and thoughts.

    Krystal,
Thanks for the message. I am waiting for the endo to call back to say whether he has been able to phone in a new prescription for the brand name methimazole. My rash is almost gone, just dry skin now. I hope I am on the way up now but it’s hard to know since my numbers yesterday were still so hyper. I do wonder if I was one who held on to the radiation in my thyroid longer. A couple of weeks ago I was still making a geiger counter go off. I am supposed to travel this weekend and don’t want to go visiting in this state.

How are you doing? Are you eating enough now? Hope your house hunt has turned up something for you.

You won’t go into a true Thyroid Storm, but as you are experiencing, the excess thyroid hormone is flooding your system. If your heart is pounding, the doctor will likely also call in something (one of the beta-blockers) for your heart. True Thyroid Storm is life-threatening. You wouldnot be able to be on the computer. Someone would be carrying you into the emergency room.

I hope you can make your trip. Take care,

    Nancy,
Thanks for the reassurance. I made the decision to try and go back on atds to help me feel better but tomorrow will be day three on waiting for the endo to get back to me saying he called in a new scrip for tapazole which I hope won’t make me itch like the generic did. I am only going from Raleigh area to Charlotte area and I’m not driving so I hope my trip will be a good one. I keep looking to the future to try and see the end of this flood of hormone. The drowning feeling wins a lot of the time. Good thing I learned to swim when I was little…..

    Krystal,
Glad to know that you’re doing well. Please do keep eating. I’ve heard that when people are hypo their appetite can decrease even though they might gain weight. I know you are on the synthroid now but wonder if that’s part of your not wanting to eat right now. My heart rate is still staying down most of the day under 90 but was 103 this morning. I don’t know if I’m ever going to get the tapazole again. The doctor hasn’t called and he’s usually not this slow. I’ll have to call again this morning.

Hope you find a good deal on a car and a place to live. Have you gotten your text books yet? If I remember you were waiting for your financial aid to come. Good luck with your classes.
