The eye issue is not just a symptom of Graves’ thyroid disease, it is a symptom of Thyroid Eye Disease, which is a separate condition but related very closely to Graves’. Treating your thyroid will not affect the condition of your eye ~ in fact, for some, they find that RAI (the actual treatment, not the uptake scan you speak of) can worsen the symptoms temporarily, so it’s a good idea to discuss these possibilities with your doctor as you proceed to a decision on how to treat your hyperthyroidism. There are two other options, besides RAI. There are medications (anti-thyroid drugs, we call them ATDs), or there is surgical removal of the thyroid. All three treatment options are valid, and can return us to health. It’s a decision you need to make for yourself.
TED is treated/managed by an ophthalmologist, not an optometrist or optician ~ we recommend ophthalmologists that are affiliated with ASOPRS (http://www.asoprs.org), because they have had additional, specific training to deal with TED patients. In most cases, TED is a "wait and see" thing until you reach the "cold phase" (search this forum for a TON of info on just this topic), but it’s best to connect with a physician ASAP.
Not sure what to say about your pain ~ could be related to a goiter, could be something else. Best to get it checked out.
Well, scan is scheduled for Tuesday, so I’ll know what is going on later this week. Like I said, my endocrinologist is certain it is Graves.
I have an appointment with a eye doctor 3/30. I certainly don’t want my eye to stay this way. looks very odd.The sensitivity is likely an infection, had a cold recently and have not been able to shake it, could have a sinus infection as well.
My main concerns are stopping the weight loss, I was thin to begin with and I have lost 20lbs and climbing, and my eyes.
Thanks
I have been diagnosed with hyperthyroid (TSH 0- free T3 & 4 very high) and have the usual symptoms, some of which go back over a year, plus my right eye lid is completely retracted, the eye is bulging a bit and it constantly has "gunk" in it and waters all the time. Endo believes it is Graves and I have a RAIU this Tuesday. Is the eye issue only a symptom of Graves?
Also, a couple days ago I developed a tender area next to my adams apple and an ear ache. When I swallow my ear and neck are sensitive. Thinking it might be an ear infection or do you think it is connected with the thyroid?
The nerves that serve the eye lid, ear and jaw are all effected by an irritated or dry eye. When I get an unexpected ear ache I think "Have I been using my eye drops enough or do I need to use them?"
It is usually dry eye in my case that mimics an ear ache. Talk to your eye doctor about what eye drops would be best to use. See if using eye drops helps the pain in the ear and jaw.

1. Add a serving of the following healthy calorie dense foods to each meal: 12 unsalted nuts, 1/4 avocado, 1 TB olive oil, 1 ounce cheese.
2. Include a healthy snack in between each meal.
3. Each day, include at least 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of weight. (Multiply your weight by 0.45 to get kilograms).
You body needs to heal right now, so it’s best to focus on whole, unprocessed foods — fresh fruits and veggies, whole grains, and lean proteins.
Hope this helps!
Well, had the RAIU (79) and scan, it is Graves, thyroid lit up like a Christmas tree. Talking with the endo tomorrow about options.
