My endo speculated wildly that living near Three Mile Island may have been my "environmental trigger" ~ not sure if there’s any truth to it, but I know there’s also speculation about Chernobyl and subsequent thyroid disease. I don’t know that anyone is willing to say conclusively.

I am 5 years successfully treated and don’t think about it much anymore, but tonight my kids suggested a causal connection: I lived for 2 years in Hiroshima in 1963-64 as a small child. Does anyone know any research that might illuminate any connection between that experience and onset of Graves’ disease at age 45? It’s a purely academic question, but I’m curious. My endocrinologist could only speculate vaguely about an "environmental trigger" when I asked her what caused it.
