From my experience, I think it would be pretty challenging to return at three weeks, if it has to be full time right away, I’d wait at least four, maybe five. Do you have the choice of shorter hours? Like return @ four hours/day for a couple weeks?
If sick/benefit time is limited, and you would like to/must return asap, I would do four hours at three weeks.
It is pretty tiring to always be "on," and your job sounds pretty demanding, plus you will be surprised at the degree of fatigue you may have after surgery. That took me by surprise.
If you can stay off six weeks, you will feel super good at four, probably, and you can do the things or take the trips you never have time to do cause you are working full time!!!!(:
shirleyHi, a quick question for any of the veterans of thyroidectomy. Aproximately how long was your recovery time? My job requires standing all day and talking constantly on phones and pagers. Just wondering…thanks.

I don’t know about thyroidectomy, because I did RAI. But I had a different type of surgical procedure a year ago, with minimally invasive technique used, and I was amazed at how weakened I was afterwards. No pain, no stitches to heal, and it took me six weeks before I had more energy than limp pasta. Apparently, general anesthesia is at least part of the problem. So allow yourself PLENTY of time.
Thanks for the comments. I know I will feel more drained than I do now…whew..lol…and it is a day to day challenge as it is. ” title=”Smile” /> I hadn’t thought about the half days, that may be a real good option. After nearly 3 years of unsuccessfully trying to achieve remission, I think I am ready for this option. I will keep everyone posted.

Hello, I had a TT back in March and it was my first surgery and personally it was a walk in the park. I was home within 24 hrs and the only pain I had was a minor sore throat from a breathing tube from the anesthesia. I took a week off from work, I work at a desk though but on the phone all day. I had my surgery on a Monday and literally by Wednesday I felt better than I ever did. I tried remission for 3 yrs as well and finally got fed up this past February. My surgeon told me that my only restrictions were not lifting anything heavy and no strenuous excercise and to be careful when turning my neck. My incision was super glued it seems with sterile strips placed on it which fell off on their own.
Wish you the best of luck on your decision.
