Chest pain/pressure can be a common symptom when we are hyperthyroid. But it is always good to check it out with a doctor. A doctor laughing at you is not professional: chest pain is both scarey and potentially serious. You were right to have it checked. In this case the ER doc was a doofus.
As to why they cannot just “do” RAI and get it over with. I don’t know. You must talk this question over with your doctor and make sure that you get a response that makes sense to you. Sometimes, we can be so very hyperthyroid that a doctor might be worried about doing RAI before getting things a bit under control. As thyroid cells die off, they release/dump stored supplies of hormone into the body all at once, and we can become VERY hyperthyroid for a few days. Limiting the amount of hormone that might get dumped after RAI is probably prudent. That might be what is going on. But you need your doctor to tell you specifically why, in your case.
I do hope you are feeling better soon.
