Hi,
I was reading your post from May. I was diagnosed with autoimmune thyroid disease two years ago after developing thyroid eye disease and testing positive for antibodies. My daughter has been having problems the last several months with an odd white coating on her tongue. It looks nasty and at times even looks as if it is peeling off in patches. She also complains that she can no longer eat spicy foods and has little taste. The doctor thought it looked like thrush, but cultures were negative. Because of other problems that she is also having they did a complete blood panel plus glucose and TSH. I was initially told that her Thyroid tests were normal, but when we received a copy of the test results I immediately noted that her TSH is 3.67 within a lab normal range of .50 to 3.90. I am concerned that she is on the upper end of the scale and may be developing hypothyroidism. I have contacted my endo with the test results to see if she needs evaluation.I was struck by your tongue/throat problem because it sounded so similar to my daughters. Doctors don’t seem to know what it is. Has any doctor since given you any indication of whether it could be related to Graves or thyroid disease in general? Another person in this string indicated that perhaps one of her doctors thought it was graves related and few physicians know this. I would appreciate any info that you or anyone else on the board can give me. Thanks!
Sorry, to say that I am still going through the same tongue/throat problems…Not quite so severe because it has now become part of my life…
My lips are always dehydrated and blistex is my answer there…The coating on the tongue comes when it chooses too and lots of water helps…blisters form quite regular and orajel for mouth sores help that…
After 13 doctor opinions in Atlanta and now that I am living in Florida all agree not much is known about the tongue..
I know it never happened before my Graves disease was diagnosed…
Go Figure…
Symptoms can be as obvious as a goiter on your neck which is visible when looking at the neck area, weight loss, extreme anxiousness (hyper), rapid heart rate, palpitations, muscular weakness, extreme fatigue, intolerance to heat, hunger tho no weight gain. I would think a check on your thyroid levels is in order. It can be controlled easily with medications for a while depending on how you do with those, but the ideal thing is to do something permanent if this is what you have. Not to worry – treatment will improve your symptoms and its better to find out if you have it so you can get on the meds to control the symptoms. Good luck and do take care of it – untreated it can be very uncomfortable – symptoms only get worse untreated.
Take care of yourself cuz no one else will!
HI
Has anyone had anyproblems with their throat???? I had RAI in Nov. yet now I am experincing a feeling of closure to mythroat. Somedays it aches. Not like a sore throat like I have a cold. It is different. Actually I went thru this when all this started in Sept. of last year. (05) My endo thinks it could be still some of the radiation. I am not level yet, not by a long shot. I am not on synthoid , the doctor took me off.
Does anyone else have these problems???
RebeccajI don’t know what it is, rebeccaj, but since your endo thinks it might have to do with RAI, I could speculate that it could be due to the damage caused to the thyroid cells by the radiation. Those damaged thyroid cells are now an inert mass for the time being. The body hasn’t removed them yet (most likely) and they are not supple and flexible like functioning thyroid cells. So, they would “feel different.”

I am experiencing a “closure” feeling in my throat also. Mine comes with stress. As long as I’m not stressed, I don’t notice it too much. My TSH is .8 right now so that’s a bit on the hyper side, and I too experienced this before RAI — I could not even swallow meat unless I purposely concentrated on swallowing. It’s not as bad now, but I’m also on a diet pill (doctor prescribed) and I think that may be adding to the anxiety and stress level.
Did you find any answers?
