Hi Julie, I had my RAI back on Nov 10. Felt worse for next week then since my swelling went down so fast, Doctor didn’t put me on anything new but kept the Beta blocks going. 3 weeks after RAI I went on a two week cruise, felt like my old self again.. Come Jan 15, I get a blood test tehn visit the Doc again to see what’s going on. I went to work the day after my RAI, just stayed away from everyone. Doc says to me that I only had to keep my distance for several days, check with your Doctor. At the hospital, before the pill, another doctor explained everything once again and gave me some booklets. I had to come back to the hospital in the afternoon as they had to “order” my pill since the hospital didn’t keep them on hand. I’m in Tampa, FL, and we have several large hosiptals. Hope all goes well with you. Presently, I feel just fine. My doctor says I had enough hormone to keep me going for two months, so I haven’t turned Hypo yet. By the way, my younger sister had the same problem but had her thyroid removed due to other complications with the iodine. Regards, Curt
Hi Julie,
I had the RAI treatment on December 7th. My Endo also told me they would tell me “specifics” when I went to take the RAI and they did not! Being a question asker, and after probing, the woman administering the pill said that if I wanted to sleep alone for a few days that would be okay, but some Dr.’s don’t mention that and my Dr. was one! Thanks to this BB I read a lot and asked questions, and stayed away from my husband for 3 days & nights. This was made easy by planning the RAI when he was going out of town on a business trip.
I was extremely tired the night of the RAI (I took it at 9am) and was in bed by 7pm. Maybe I caused this in my head?? The next day I had a scratchy throat and my necked swelled quite a bit. I called my endo and he said he could be me on Prednizone (sp?) but he would rather not. He suggested taking an anti-inflammatory (advil) 3 times a day to see if it would take down the swelling. I was fine after a day and a half. A few people on the BB warned that I may feel extremely hyper a week after the RAI, but I did not have that. I go back the third week in January for a blood test & endo appt. and am very curious to see where I am on the “rollercoaster”.
Hope this helps and good luck to you. Let me know if you have any other questions!
KathyI have been recently diagnosed w/ GD. My uptake test was 100% — the lab tech had never seen anyone with such a high result. I am seeing an endocrinologist later this month. I’m married, the mother of 2 small kids and work outside the home. This has truly put a strain on my marriage — my husband doesn’t understand why I fall asleep by 9PM every night. Also it is affecting my work, I find it hard to concentrate, and am sure my attitude is not the best
I’ve been taking a beta blocker for the last couple of week and that has at least helped stop the tremors in my hands and legs — they were terrible.
I’m glad to find this group as I am sure I will need support in the coming months.

I am currently on Methimazole and will be getting off to do the RAI soon. I was wondering if anyone has any insight into what I may experience immediately after RAI. I have been feeling great on Methimazole, once I was stable, and have been on it for 2+ years so I am a little nervous about not feeling well again. From the people I talked to they feel great afterwards, but I am assuming there will be a transition period. Any comments would be great. Thanks!
