Kris,
I had my thyroid removed 15 months ago. It has been up and down but the surgery went well. I had the surgery Friday am and went home SUnday afternoon. My calcium did drop but was not a problem just went on calcium supplements. My scare unfortunately is still pretty sore and red at times. I had an excellent surgeon she also only does the thyroid so I was happy with that. My skin just happens to be the type that has a problem healing. I was able to drive I think within a week it was once I had full range with my neck. I was out of work for 3 weeks. I was pretty tired after that was my biggest complaint. I had a nodule and had to wait on pathology so I had to wait for a while before starting the synthroid. Be patient with yourself and allow yourself the time to heal. Have faith in your doctor if this is all he does then he seems like a good one to have do the surgery. I hope this was helpful to you. Best of luck and keep us posted. Katie
Thank you Katie…I also wanted to ask you ,was your goiter large…,how long had you had graves before you had the surgery and why did you chose it over the other options…What was it like just after sugery as far as in the hospital, the pain etc.(others out there who have had surgery too) …I hope you donot mind me asking…Kris
Kris,
I had graves for 3 years before I decided to have the surgery. It took me a long time to make the decision. I personally did not want to go with RAI. It was just a personal decision that I made for myself alot of people on the board had it and were fine with it and their decision. I didnt want to go off my PTU and go through that hyper thyroid state for 2 weeks prior to my uptake. As far as the pain went it was very minimal in my opinion. It was definetly sore but was not unbearable. I was able to just take motrin for the pain. My nodule was not very large. Hope this helps!!
