Thank you Ski. I never thought of asking for a different med. I think I may be asleep all the time!! LOL
I am now 2 1/2 weeks post-RAI and feeling relatively o.k. My Dr. originally prescribed propranolol to “help deal with the symptoms” and the prescription said to take it once a day as needed. Right before the RAI I received a new elevated dose of propranolol and the label said “take once a day” (no ‘as needed’). I have continued to only take one on the days I am not feeling quite right (elevated pulse, palpitations) – and this seems to be happening less than before. I would like to hear what others have experienced with the beta-blocker. Should I be taking it every day or really only when needed? How long post-RAI should I expect to take it for? Thanks – gkal.
You must follow your doctor’s instructions with the propanolol. This type of medication requires “weaning” off: stopping it too abruptly can cause a rebound of the types of symptoms the medication has been blocking.
So, ask your doctor what you should do.
Bobbi — NGDF Online FacilitatorI would talk to the doctor about your problems. I can take propranolol up to four times a day (I have been fine taking it 2X a day) so it may depend on the dose you have.
Did anyone watch the 60 Minutes show this past Sunday and the piece about Propranolol being used to treat Post Traumatic Stress Disorders? (The story can be found on their website.) I never knew that one of the potential side effects of propranolol could be memory loss. I was taking 60-120 mg a day of Propranolol last year for about 6 months. During that period my memory got horrible. It was obviously to everyone around me, co-workers, friends and family. And although its been a year since I stopped taking it, my memory is still bad. Sometimes it seems like something in my brain just doesn’t work the way it’s supposed to. I just wonder if the stress of being hyperthyroid combined with the use of propranolol could be the cause of my memory problems. Has anyone else had a similar experience?
