    Appreciate that input and I knew that part about what novacaine could do and especially it is not good when you are hyper………..but I had no problems with shakiness and fast heart………I had problems with uncomfortableness on the left side of my face (cheek, temple, by the ear)….not like pounding pain, but just a hurt w/stinging and burning around my eye (which I have already due to eye disease but it was more hurtful after the novacaine wore off for 2-3 days)……even today being the 4th day there is still some odd hurting feelings but now coming more from the tooth area. I might be calling my dentist to see if they check this out next week. I had only been curious if novacaine could do something to the nerves to effect some w/TED and cause this stuff around the eye to happen. But I guess not. I might try having them use something else w/me though in the future!

    Hope you have been doing OK, Jake!!

    why are graves patients not suppose to take novacaine and antihistamines?
    I just had a dental implant and I think the dentist used Novacaine with no problems but I have had my Graves treated. Does that make a difference. I was just reading about this online. Just curious.
    Thank You

    I believe it depends upon where you are in the process of things. (That said, please double check this information with your doctor.) While hyperthyroid, I had an immensely bad reaction to novocaine, which contains epinephrine, or some similar component which is an “upper.” Well, you can imagine what taking an “upper” while already hyperthyroid would do to you. The dentist thought he was going to have to call 911! Terrifying.

    As for antihistimines, I have not heard this – but, again, don’t listen to me — ask your doctor. There are, however, many cold preparations which we are advised not to take while hyperthyroid, and, in addition, these cold medications also contain wording that you should not take them when you have “thyroid disease.” These particular cold medications do not contain antihistimines necessarily, but also contain some type of “upper,”like the novocaine. I have been told by my doctors that I can take them…now.

    Check with your doctor — or if your doctor is unavailable, check with your pharmacist, about whether you can safely take a medication due to your present condition.;
