I don’t have any advice because I myself am getting ready to have this same surgery minus the lower lid tissue removal (maybe that’ll be later) this Thursday May 6!! I hope I do as good as you did as far as the swelling goes or at least it sounds like yours went away fast. I don’t have any knowledge of having to go back to get them lifted though. Did you know this in advance because yours were very very retracted??
To Sandy:
Hi. Read about your eyelid surgery. How interesting. Were you under general anesthetic for the eyelid surgeries? You mentioned waking up. I’m facing my 5th eyelid surgery. The last four were failures, in that my left upper eyelid was lowered too much during the first eyelid surgery, and subsequent three surgeries did not work at all. My surgeon pulled my eyelid back down and bandaged it. When I returned to get the bandage removed (by another, local doctor) my eyelid had completely dropped back down so that the eye looks like it’s half closed all the time. All these surgeries under local anesthetic, no less.
Now I’m going for a consult with another plastic surgeon for a different procedure. It’s been a year and a half of this, with a deformed eyelid. Plus, in an attempt to bring up the lower left eyelid by inserting a graft, my body eventually absorbed the graft material and my lower lid droops a little again.
You’re very lucky that the surgeries worked for you the first time around. My surgeon informed me that it’s extremely difficult to get both eyes perfectly symetrical. It’s very depressing.
Sorry to sound so long-winded; just interested in other people’s eyelid surgery experiences after orbital decompression, which I had 23 months ago.Good luck,
ReneeHello,
Just returned from the occuloplastic surgeon’s office and Yippee, my eyelid stayed up. Monday during the procedure she said there was a 20% chance they could drop again because of the TED. Let me tell you she was extremely happy to see they were both in place. She had to remove the inner stitches yesterday and work them like raising a shade versus lowering. Adjusting those threads, sitting me up, checking, back down, adjust again, etc, etc. After 4 attempts she got the left eye as close as she could to the right eye. From a reclining position it looked like she was working a puppet. I was so worried about applying ice fearful they would drop again like they did after surgery on the 26th. Thank God they stayed put. This was done under a local. A lot of bruising on that left eyelid, but with time that will go away. I did have both upper and lower lids taken care of at the same time. My nuro-opthamologist suggested getting it all taken care of at the same time because after seeing how nice the uppers will turn out, facing the lowers would be difficult and he was so right.Quite an experience. Also, not all the flesh could be removed in case the time would come when swelling may take place again. She said trying to use flesh from behind the ear as a graft just doesn’t look like your own. She did remove all excess tissue from the lowers.
Thank you for your concern and I hope to return to work Friday to try and organize the mess.
