Your story sounds so very much like mine, except that I also had the eye disease, which wasn’t really bad until I had the radioactive iodine. But that’s another story all together.
I also gained weight. It happens more than most people think, according to my endocrinologist. When thyroid levels are just moderately elevated but not extremely high, what happens is that our appetites are increased but we’re so tired that we don’t burn off our usual amount of energy expenditure, so we gain instead of losing weight. It’s the people with really HIGH levels of thyroid hormone who lose weight rapidly.
I know it’s really frustrating how long it can take to get treatment and feel better with this disease. I’m glad you’ve found us here, and hopefully resolving any questions about the treatment options by others who’ve made those choices will help you feel better. At least, you’re not alone.
