I think you may have a bit of a misconception, Nina. You wrote to gryneyedladi asking if her thyroidectomy hadn’t helped her eyes, even a little bit. But treating the thyroid problem unfortunately does not do any good for the eye disease. There is a slight chance of RAI temporarily aggravating the eye condition, so when there is severe eye disease our doctors usually recommend that we get a thyroidectomy (or stay on the antithyroid drugs) to avoid any temporary worsening. Those recommendations, however, are based solely on the need to treat the thyroid problem. There is no thought that getting rid of the thyroid will eliminate the antibodies that are causing the eye disease. You need to treat the two conditions by separate means.
