No, taking antithyroid drugs does not kill the thyroid off. Some folks do go into remission (although this occurs due to antibody level changes, not due to the drugs’ action), and some people have the antibodies for Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, in addition to Graves antibodies. So they can fluctuate between hyper and hypo conditions. Also, the antibody attack does lead to thyroid failure over time, so some people decide to take the antithyroid drugs until that happens.
