Hi! I have dealt with the constipation issue since being diagnosed in Feb 2002 (took Prop until Oct). I was becoming “toxic” because I was storing everything – waste, meds, viruses, etc. and ended up in emergency room week after Thanksgiving. Finally, my doc prescribed an RX for Kristalose (Lactulose) – it is a powder that I mix with small amt of water. I take it Mon-Wed-Fri nights – and it works very gently. I think this is an important issue that needs to be addressed more often. So glad you had the courage to bring it up – some people back off of this topic. Joy in NoGA mtns.

My Dr. put me on Propranolol to prepare me for the next step, surgery, RAI, or ATD. It makes me nervous b/c the side effects of this drug say tiredness, weakness or dizziness, but I already feel like that all the time. How much worse can it get? What can I expect from this drug?

I’ve been on propranolol for 3 weeks. It’s helped to slow me down as I was very Hyperthyroid. Plus I’m sleeping now too. I haven’t noticed any side affects. Good luck to you!

Here is a recipe for a natural, gentle, fiber-filled way to try to avoid constipation, even when actually hypo.

Take 1/2 cup of unprocessed bran (available in natural food stores) — it can be either oat bran or wheat bran.
Mix it with 1/2 cup of applesauce and 1/4 cup of prune juice.

Start with 2 T. daily followed by at least 6 ouces of water. You can gradually increase intake to up to 4 T. daily.

You want to avoid taking too much, because it is high in fiber, so gas and bloating may occur. This usually resolves itself in two weeks.

The mixture keeps in the refrigerator for about one week.
