Kathleen, I’ll jump in here with my 2 cents worth.

My ophthalmologist, who was not a surgeon, recommended the surgery for my upper and lower lid retraction, for medical reasons. You COULD get a second opinion on the necessity of it in your case, but that might not be totally necessary. I suggest you first decide whether you would get the surgery if ONLY cosmetic considerations were an issue, and if you would not, THEN talk to your current doctor about what can happen to your right eye without the surgery, and make your decision based on that.

If you really do want that second opinion, I can give you a good place in LA to go–just email me: diannen@ngdf.org My surgery was done by a doctor there.

For me, the removal of fat pads around the eyes was not covered by insurance, as it is NOT medically necessary, even though it is caused by the disease. It was worth the discomfort and expense for me.

It’s not too bad having the surgery under “twilight anesthesia”. Email me if you want to know more.

Hi Kathleen, I had the eyelid surgery called Blepharoplasy, done 2 and half weeks ago and the surgery itself was ok, I was awake but really out of it and didn’t feel a thing, afterwards was a little hard.
I’m glad I got it done but the surgeon poked, burned or did something to my eye and now it’s really blurry, but this is very rare and I went with the first plastic surgeon I found when I should have searched around a bit so don’t let this discourage you. My eye look better already in 2 weeks they are still swollen a little, I only hope my vision in my right eye returns to normal but the Dr doesn’t seem to think it will.

    Take care
    Cynthia

    Hi!

I live in the Los Angeles area and was wondering if you could recommend a few promninent eye surgeons — is there a list? Are there people with whom to get feedback from?

    Please advise.

There are some excellent doctors affiliated with Jules Stein Eye Institute at UCLA. Please email me if you want a specific doctor’s name.

This could be for Jake ,but anyone that has had the surgery. The eye specialist told me I had hit the cold phase ,it’s been a year and a half now. Ive been on steriods and had the radiation therapy now it’s seems to have settled down. He wants to do surgery and I said no because Im scared. The Dr here is the only one that looks after thyroid patients from what Im told.He explained the surgery and that I would have to sleepover at the hospital for a night. The problem Im having is what if it makes things worse. I have had a hell of a year and am doing not to badly right now . I don’t venture out very far as my eyes get really irratated and sore but I am finally getting used to the fact that I have this problem and don’t want worse ones. Iknow we are all different but would someone share with me the outcome of there surgery. H explained that he would make a small insicion at the corner of the eye and go in through the bottom of the eye lid. If I got double vision from the surgery he could correct that in only six month time. .Jake I know that you had lots of surgeries. Is there anything that you can say that might help. I do like the Dr that is not a problem . Im scared for my sight.
Thank you from a scared cookie.
    Lou
