    We are not doctors here — you need to keep that in mind. But it is my understanding that your doctor does not just “want” to get your thyroid hormone levels corrected and stabilized before your hysterectomy surgery — they MUST be stabilized and controlled. Typically, only dire emergency surgeries get conducted on patients with uncontrolled hyperthyroidism.

    That said, methimazole typically works well to control things, once the proper dose is established. This drug acts as a chemical block to the production of thyroid hormone. It starts “working” right away, but the thyroid cells also store extra thyroid hormone, so until those stored supplies are used up (which typically takes weeks, not months) you may not see much progress on blood tests or with symptoms.
