I had swelling around both eyes for at least a year. Had watery eyes, especially the left one, especially in the morning on first awakening.
Thought it was allergies. Finally woke up to what I thought was a clear jelly like substance in my eye and thought it was an infection. Guess what? There was nothing in my eye. It was the outer membrane of the eye that filled with fluid. That’s what sent me to the Doctor.Wishing you Well

Hi — I can only speak for myself, but my early TED symptoms lasted for about five months, from mid-September of last year until February of this year when things kicked into mid-serious mode. “Full-blown serious mode” started about three months after that in late May, and since then, I’ve been in treatment. In the five-month long early mode, my symptoms were quite mild, but a definite change from before: A slight dryness of the eyes that I thought were hormonal changes (since I had just turned 30) or due to my needing to clean my contacts more conscientiously; every so often, one eye seemed to blink a little behind the other; and I had a very slight increase in redness, a little more itchiness. I never thought I was SICK and didn’t connect the eye stuff with my former Graves-thyroid problem for a long time because I got through the Graves very very easily (with RAI) and because the eye deterioration started off so innocuously.
I think it’s worth noticing these small changes that you seem to be experiencing, but to do so without freaking out, if at all possible!
From what I understand (and the facilitators can correct me on this), only a minority of folks go on to develop eye problems that require serious medical intervention. I believe most find all the relief they need with some over-the-counter eyedrops.
Best,
MusicalitaHi everyone,
Does anyone know what the early symptoms of TED are? I have been trying to research it and cannot seem to find any good answers they all relate to severe. I am asking because I have been having terrible headaches and my right eye seems slightly sunken in compared to the left I cannot figure out if the left eye is out or the fat pad on the top of my right eye is enlarged, but something is definatly off. My husband mentioned something to me this morning as well. Thanx for any help you can give.Early symptoms are dry eyes, trouble focusing, double vision to name a few.
We recommend that all people diagnosed with Graves’ get a good baseline eye exam from an eye doctor. That way they can catch early problems if they exist. If they do not then they have a fantastic baseline to base any future changes on.
During a good baseline exam they will check the condition of your optic nerve, eye pressure, how far they stick out of the socket, color vision and usually a field of vision test. Those tests tell them the general health of your eye, the optic nerve and the muscles.
If you suspect you have early TED make an appointment with an eye doctor and let us know what they said.
We are only a click away.
