My RAI is set for September 30. I’m so anxious to have it and start on the road to feeling better. Being on the low sodium/low iodine diet has helped me lose 20 + pounds. I’m a big milk and dairy person so don’t know if I’ll have to cut down on my intake of dairy once I have it. I’m so hungry for a piece of toast and a glass of milk! I’m just looking forward to having the rapid heart rate and heat sensations diminish. There’s been times that I’ve felt like I might pass out.

I was never cautioned against dairy, Joanie, so I hope that doesn’t happen in your case either. I do wish you good luck. You might want to take a friend or family member with you to your RAI. If you are given instructions by the nuclear med doctor there, having a second pair of ears can be really helpful. I got all of my instructions on what to do right before I took the RAI, and I was so nervous that I probably forgot half of what the doctor told me.

    Again, good luck.

Good luck with your RAI. I got my instructions in written form as well as hearing them. It was great to have that and the phone number so I could have called back if I needed to. I had my husband with me and he was a great support, figuratively and literally as I was sure my legs weren’t going to be able to get me from the car to the hospital. I was a mess…… A lot better now more than a year out. Levoxyl dose finally getting more settled and I’m able to do a little more every day.

Hello, I am not a bit aware of refraining from milk and dairy related to Grave’s. Have a piece of cinnamon toast and a nice glass of milk, sounds like it would really float your boat!
Seriously, I am not a professional, but this is simply not familiar.

I already picked up the list of do’s and don’t’s related to the RAI. I have some questions to ask when I get there. I’ve learned to write everything down when I get an answer. No one is going with me. My husband is up north until the end of October. I think I’ll be OK. Maybe I’ll call in the morning to see if it’s advisable to bring someone along.

I think the doctor took me off of milk and dairy because of the products that cows eat. They may be grown in soil high in iodine. I’m not sure, but I’m buying a gallon of milk tomorrow morning to be certain I have some on hand. Just knowing the end of this diet is in sight is a thrill. However, I hope I can keep off the 22 pounds I’ve lost.

Thanks for all the good thoughts. It helps knowing you’re not alone on this journey. I would love to go to San Diego but can’t at this time. Maybe next year.

Just wanted to wish you well. I am also doing RAI- mine is the next day on friday oct. 1. Hope you get to feeling better. My most annoying symptom is the heart palpitations and I am certainly looking forward to seeing an end to those.

Hi Joanie – I have not had RAI, but I know that some docs recommend a low-iodine diet prior to treatment on the theory that if you deprive the thyroid gland of iodine for a period of time prior to treatment, it will suck up more of the radioactive iodine.

If there is someone that you can catch today, you might ask for clarification as to when you can resume your regular diet. I am *not* aware of any long-term restrictions on dairy after RAI.

It done…and it was so easy! Went alone. Tech was very funny and put me at ease. Advised me to suck on lemon drops for the next few days to keep the salivary glands working so it doesn’t pool in them. Can cause a bitter taste. My diet is only for 2-3 more days! Then look out world… I can’t wait to have that piece of toast, a glass of milk and then a good steak!

I’m back on my PTU starting tomorrow as a precautionary measure. In 5 weeks I have bloodwork and go to the endo in 6. It’s just the imagination working but I think I feel better already! OK. But I am looking forward to that day!
