My son is suppose to go in 2 weeks for RAI and I was just sitting here thinking about all of the precautions we have to take when it hit me about him having to flush 2-3 time after urinating. We are on septic system and well water. So if his urine is being put into the sceptic system and eventually released into the weaping beds, won’t that contaminate my yard with radiation and eventually maybe even my well??????

If anyone know’s the answer I would most definately appreciate any advice!

Hello – I’ve never seen any specific guidance on this. The usual recommendation is to flush *everything* that the patient might have touched (toilet paper, clean-up wipes, kleenex, etc.) down the toilet. (At least the items that are flushable).

You might check with the Nuclear Medicine Department at the facility you are considering, or possibly ask the county or state whether any extra precautions would be recommended.

Hi Chillborn,

Iodine 131 is what I think is used on RAI. Iodine 131 has a half life of just over a week (8 days). That means in a month its radioactive potential will be 1/16th of that it was when injected for the RAI. Because of this you have little to worry about. The iodine will dilute in the septic system quickly. By the time it runs through the tank it should have decayed several half lives.
