I’m getting 10 (mil?) RAi on Friday and asked the person fron the nuclear medicine department if I should stay away from my 4 dogs. He said I can be around them. He said there have been tests done with cats and the radiation didn’t affect them. I wanted to get a 2nd opinion.
Also, I work from home on the computer and plan on coming right home and working after Rai. Does the radiation affect the pc?
I read some place on here that someone used their cell phone the first couple days after Rai and it quit working.

The guy in nuclear meds said just make sure I’m not sick to my stomach before taking the pill, drink alot of water after and don’t be around woman of childbearing age the first 48 hrs. Oh, and wash my hands alot and flush twice.

    Thanks!

I got 8 millicuries, and was told not to hold my dogs up against my neck area. I didn’t have to stay away from them, I just couldn’t "cuddle" them for a few days, and I did keep my distance. As to whether or not you could use your pc or your cell phone? I haven’t ever heard of that — but someone else here might chime in. I know that I used my computer after RAI, though, and I don’t recall that I had any problems with it. It is entirely possible that someone, somewhere, had their cell phone quit working after RAI. That doesn’t mean that the cell phone stopped because of the RAI. It could be coincidence. Just because something follows something else in time, once, doesn’t mean there’s cause and effect. But that’s a guess on my part. I don’t know who you could ask to find out for sure.

Good luck with you RAI treatment.

Thank you Bobbi. I have another question: after doing Rai ( 2 days after) the endo is putting me back on 30 mg of methimazole a day until I see him again which is 5 weeks after rai. Does that sound right? Shouldn’t my blood work be done again before 5 weeks? I’m also on beta blockers and blood thinners which I’m staying on same dosage too after Rai.

    Thanks again!

Some endos do put their patients back on antithyroid meds after RAI. As to the timing, ask your endo if you can have the blood tests done sooner if you start to find multiple symptoms of hypothyroid. I had my first blood test done five weeks after RAI but the timing is guess work — some folks take longer to go hypothyroid, others don’t. RAI does not work over night — it takes a few weeks at least to fully "register."

I’m just wondering why he’s keeping me on such a high dose of 30 mg for so long after Rai. Guess I’ll play it by ear, it’s so hard to get answers from endo’s office that if I start having hypo symptoms before 5 weeks I’ll call my gp and ask about getting blood work done early. They can then fax results to endo if needed. I don’t go back to cardiologist until 5 weeks after rai either. Hopefully will be at the point to get off blood thinners and lower dosage of beta blockers.
Per cardiologist, haven’t been able to do anything to raise my heart rate for over 2 months, can’t wait to start taking walks again and lose all this weight I’ve gained. I’m looking forward to RAI and getting back to normal whatever that is!
These muscle cramps have been out of this world this last couple months!

I am having RAI tomorrow (Wed) and it’s helpful to know someone else going through this. My endo is putting me back on Methimazole 72 hours after treatment. I have an appointment in one month with labs after 3 weeks. I have been on medicine since Sept and my labs still show I’m hyper.

Good Luck! I’m going in for rai on Thursday, it was Friday but had to change the appointment. How much methimazole are you taking after rai?
It’s been nice not taking it for the last 6 days, my stomach was so bloated on it that now it has gone back to normal.
Sure wish I didn’t have to take it anymore. But hopefully will only be for a few weeks.
So glad to get the rai over with and off that medication.
I don’t have an appointment for 5 weeks after rai, if I start getting hypo symptoms I will go to my Dr and have blood work done before that.

Anyone else get terrible muscle cramps or did in the past? I had one yesterday near my heart and at first thought I was having a heart attack! Endo said it’s because thyroid levels are changing. Sometimes I just move a certain way and get them, very painful.

I am taking 30 mg . I am supposed to start taking it again in 72 hours.

The RAI wasn’t bad. I just had to swallow 3 pills. I am now home and enjoying the quiet. I sent my husband to his son’s house for a few days.

I have had bad leg cramps. I started taking vitamins and Co Q 10 and it has helped alot.

    Good luck tomorrow
