Going in for RAI in about a week. I have 2 boys and am confused about the quarantine. I have heard it is ok to stay in a hotel and heard it is not ok. It will be very hard for my boys if I stay home and they are not able to come near me. I am curious how others handled this. I tried Methomazole and got horrible hives. I don’t like the way PTU is making me feel and concerned about how hard it can be on your liver. I was diagnosed in June. I just am ready to feel better.

Hello – Your best source of information should be the specific instructions given by your local clinic, as guidelines can vary from state to state and facility to facility.

If you just want some general info, this link is to the American Thyroid Association’s guidance on radiation safety.

The ATA does *not* recommend a hotel stay after RAI, due to potential risks to hotel staff that might be pregnant.

If your boys are older, they will hopefully understand the need to keep your distance for a couple of days. With younger kids, though, they just can’t understand, so it’s better to plan for an alternate location (like a friend’s home) for yourself or for your boys.

The “Treatment Options” thread in the announcements section of the forum has a couple of nice links that go through the pros and cons of anti-thyroid meds, RAI, and surgery. Although liver damage is quite rare with PTU, this is obviously a very serious issue, so is something to be aware of.

Wishing you all the best as you make this decision!

I had RAI on Friday morning. Am staying in the guest room at my grandma’s house. I will be going back home tomorrow.

I feel fine, but have no appetite. Wondering if anyone else experienced this? I guess this is ok since I am really worried about gaining weight back. I lost about 20-25 pounds and certainly had it to lose.

Still not sleeping great but hoping that will change. I have my first follow up with labs and my doctor next week.

I am a teacher gearing up to go back to work. Hoping my journey isn’t too up and down as this is a busy time of year. Luckily I am only working part time and my own children will be in school all day.

Still trying to figure out this goofy disease…
