I am currently struggling with side effects from meds to control my thyroid & have been told that radioactive iodine will be the next step. But, I was told that you have to prep for the iodine with at least a week of prednisone and another week of prednisone after treatment–is this true? (this was not told to me by my endo, but the doc I work for.) I’m more leary of the prednisone at this point. Also, are there any weird side effects from the iodine treatment? Thanks in advance for any advice!

I’ve never heard any thing about taking predisone before RAI. I don’t think that’s standard. I had RAI 3 months ago. I would have had to stop taking the antithryoid meds if I had been on them. I was off for a year before the RAI. I’d get information from your endocrinologist. A lot of GPs don’t really deal with hyperthyroidism too much and don’t really know what’s what’s sometimes.

I have heard of this. The context I know of it is to "protect" your eyes from any stimulation of the antibodies that affect your eyes. Ask your endocrinologist–that’s a reasonable question.

Two weeks of Prednisone is tolelrable, even if not fun by the end of the two weeks. You will be tapered off.

I have also heard of it if you have the eye involvement. I had no prep at all and wasn’t on any meds when I had rai. Check out the rai threads on this board, that’s where I got much of my info. Many years ago I took prednisone for a couple months for an unrelated issue and it gave me no troubles. I had rai 16 days ago and have not had any side effects at all other than once in a while my throat feels slightly sore, but that could just as well be allergies.

I only took the prednisone AFTER the RAI and only took it for two weeks.

My eyes didn’t really suffer too much from my Graves (thankfully!). I just used the eyedrops for a couple of months and stopped. Altho from time to time (maybe once a month – if that) I’ll put some in if they are feeling a little "dry".

I was told by one endo that the prednisone is needed prior to RAI treatment if your eyes have been affected by the Grave’s. He told me it is to bring down swelling because the RAI treatment could make it worse otherwise.

Thanks so much for all the info–it helps a lot. It feels good to be able to talk about this stuff with others that have gone through the same things as myself. <img decoding=” title=”Very Happy” />
