I am a 21 year old athletic female, and I have always been slim. I also have ADHD, and a part of my symptoms are sensory issues. I cannot wear tight clothing or it irritates me. I have been on methimazole since I was 16. I eat very healthy, and work out five days a week.

I am concerned about the weight gain after the RAI treatment. I read on the answerbox that the average gained for an adult female is 12 pounds. That’s a substantial amount on my 5’2 frame. If I gain the average, I will be in the overweight BMI category. How do I prevent this? How long does it take to go away? Although it sounds petty, the sensory aggravation that feeling bloated causes is extremely painful for me. It’s more than just an appearance concern.

I am also concerned about the low energy aspect of hypothyroidism. Admittedly, I can handle being hyper more so than hypo. In the periods of time where I have been hypothyroid, I have missed classes and assignments due to being low energy. My attention issues worsen more so than they do when hyper. I worry that this will interfere with my senior year of college.

How do I manage these things?

Hello – weight gain for sure can be a challenge for some patients, regardless of treatment option. Keeping a food log can be helpful, as well as returning to activity once your doctor gives you the OK. Are you currently on antithyroid drugs and looking for definitive (permanent) therapy? You might also visit our Facebook group, as that is more active than this one. Go to Facebook, search for @GDATF, click “Join Group”, and when your notification button lights up, answer the 3 new member questions and agree to the group rules.
