I quite smoking Jan 1 1999 I wasn’t a heavy smoker but I have smoked for more then half my life.. I have to admitt it was the hardest thinkg for me to do..I still want to smoke because Yes I did enjoy it.. But I don’t ecause if I can lessen the chance of getting the eye disease (yes smoking contributes to the eye disease BIG TIME) I will do what ever I can.. Each day is a step towards good health for me now.. Hopefully in the next month or so I won’t miss smoking but I can be around it and it doesn’t bother me anymore.. There is hope and there is alot of help out there to stop smoking.. Best of luck

Help! I read that smoking can aggravate the progession of eye symptoms. Has anyone quit and experienced a remission that they can relate to the quitting smoking? Please, I am not asking for words of encouragement for quitting at this exact moment.( Read that as denial ! ) I am well aware of the general disasterous effects of smoking but am dreading quitting. Does anybody know more about the link between smoking and progression of Grave’s eye symptoms? Does anyone have any knowledge of the symptoms “flaming out” on their own after PTU therapy? Still coming to that place of choosing between RAI and Drugs, very frustrated by the apparent lack of data and definitive info.!

While the studies show that smokers have a greater chance of worse eye problems than non-smokers, the studies do not show that quitting smoking makes eye problems go away. Nor do they show that it prevents them from happening. I asked my endo about whether there was any evidence that quitting smoking would help my eyes, and she flat out stated “no”. But look at the question I asked: it involved whether there were STUDIES that showed this. So, I suspect those of us who have this question have to go into logic and fact which tells us that cigarette smoking is just generally bad for us, and recognize that doing something that will improve our overall health cannot be bad, ultimately, for our eyes. I managed to quit smoking for four months this summer (unfortunately, I live in a household of smokers, and lapsed back). During that time, my eyes actually got worse for a while, and then got better again. I think it was associated with stress, actually. I had my gall bladder removed (the initial impetus to quit smoking) which involved MAJOR stress for me, and also the stress of quitting. So for a month or so, my eyes were actually worse than “normal”. It went away.

I wish you VERY good luck, if you decide to quit smoking. And take it from me: NEVER con yourself into thinking you can “smoke just one.”
That thought leads to almost certain defeat.

    Bobbi,
Unless I mis-understood earlier postings by Jake & others, there ARE studies out there that have said that smoking greatly increases the risks of the Eye Disease. I know it is back in previous posts. Will try to find it for you. Talk to you soon,

Debbie: I have eye disease and was a smoker. I keep hearing that smokers have a greater risk of eye disease. My neuro- optho , who is an expert in Graves, told me to quit smoking or take the chance of going blind. I quit a year ago October but my husband continued to smoke. He finally quit 4 months ago. My eyes do feel less irritated as to vision I know it is better but don’t know if is from not smoking or surgery . I like to think a little of both.

    Good Luck

I have a severe case of the eye disease and I used to smoke. When I smoked my eyes were most definately worse and the disease progressed quickly. I quit smoking in August and my eyes have not gotten any worse. If I had been told then that smoking could contribute to this disease I would have quit right away. If you have the eye disease-quit smoking. Jenna
