I’ll sing my favorite refrain: It’s never a bad idea to visit an Ophthalmologist and get a baseline exam done. You’re well prepared for such an initial consultation with the Ophthalmologist because your Endo measured your eyes initially. You should take that report with you when (if you decide to) you see an Ophthalmologist. That said, the Ophthalmologist will most likely not rely on the Endo’s measurements, because each person measures the way that person measures: only a comparison of Doctor A’s measurements June 1 are a good comparison base for Doctor A’s measurements on July 30. Your Endo’s measurements are useful, though, as an accompaniment to any notes she/he made in your chart about the assessment of your eyes.
Please remember that you need to get a referral to an Ophthalmologist, who treats diseases of the eyes. Your Optician or Optometrist are not qualified to diagnose TED, nor to perform the full range of measurements and tests needed for a clinical diagnosis.
Good luck. I hope that you, like most people with Graves, do not suffer from TED. Getting a baseline exam now and meeting your Ophthalmologist is a good thing to do to prepare for the possibility (however slim) that you might someday go through this.
Blessings.
I have a question maybe somebody can help answer. I’ve been reading the posts and all the talk on surgury for eyes. My question is- I was treated with RAI for grave’s and at the time I had some weird things going on with my eyes, but since the RAI and since I am how “hypo” and taking syntyroid- my eyes returned to what I “think” is normal. Is there any chance of the eye disease part returning when you are “hypo”? – I am just wondering if I should go to an Opto doctor just in case. I never thought to ask my endo, because he measured my eyes and they measured fine, but now I am worried.
Thanks for any input and advice!!!!!
AmyI was just wondering with Graves I have had my thyroid removed 16 months ago. I never had a problem with my eyes but recently especially when I am reading some of the posts that are in capital letters it seems to really bother my eyes. Is it possible to have eye issues after your thyroid is removed?
KatieYes it is possible to have eye problems after the thyroid is removed. The eye disease a different diease all together. It is closely linked to Graves’ but it is different.
Caps are hard to read, I agree. Perhaps you should get a good base like eye exam to see how your eyes are doing.
