You have definitely come to the right place!

Honestly, it sounds like your doctor is right on top of things, that is GREAT.

Remember, hypothyroidism only results in weight gain as long as you remain hypothyroid ~ once you are on replacement hormone, your levels normalize and you are no longer hypothyroid. You WOULD be, if you stopped taking replacement hormone, which you won’t. <img decoding=” title=”Very Happy” />

MANY MANY MANY MANY of our members have had thyroidectomies and have been pleased with the result.

Good luck with your treatment! Do a search for thyroidectomy, you’ll find a lot of good information. Please feel free to ask any questions that come up, it’s what we’re here for!

After trying to become pregnant for just under a year, I was recently diagnosed with Graves’ Disease and immediately began treatment with Atenolol and PTU. I had my first six-week checkup this morning, and while I feel great (having gotten through a few weeks of muscle pain and other minor side effects), I have a rash across the top and down the side of my back.

My doctor is wonderful, and I trust his judgment. He is concerned about the skin rash, explaining that this type of side effect could be indicative of others to come, and he has told me to stop taking the PTU as of today.

He is hesitant to start another medication, mainly due to our desire to try for a child as soon as possible. For the same reason, he is (and we are) ruling out RAI. While he waits for results from my blood work this morning, he is asking us to consider a thyroidectomy.

Here’s the part I’m embarrassed about: I’m worried so much less about the surgery and so much more about the hypothyroidism. More honestly, about weight gain. I know it’s irrational, given my desire to have children (and thereby gain a whole baby’s worth of weight), but it’s something about which I’m aware is psychological but still feel helpless.

Any advice or suggestions regarding this surgery and life after? Anybody out there have the surgery for Graves’ Disease or know somebody who has? Thanks so much for your help (and kindness, please).
