CALL YOUR DOCTOR!! If you haven’t already. Hives are one of the possible indications that your body doesn’t handle the PTU optimally. It’s possible that he/she may want to switch you to the other type of antithyroid drug, to see if that is metabolized any better by your body.

    Good morning everyone,

Does anyone have any experience with hives? I’ve been on PTU for about a month, and have an unbelievable case of hives (or giant welts)! I’m wondering if anyone else has had this problem.

    Thanks :) Patricia

Has anyone had problems with itching after taking
PTU ? After a severe allergic with methimazole
my doctor prescribed PTU and I have started to
itch. I am hoping that the problem is not PTU
since currently I am inclined to take it long
term and not choose radioactive iodine.
    I would appreciate any information.

Although these two antithyroid drugs are slightly different chemically, I have heard of people having problems with both of them. I hope that isn’t the case, but if you cannot tolerate them, please know that RAI is not a bad choice to have at all. It certainly beats being hyper.

    Wishing you luck.

I had a severe allergic reaction to the PTU (Tinkling in the throat and tongue). I was on Tapizole for 3 weeks, when I broke out in hives. Because of my reaction to the PTU, my endo didn’t want to take any chances and took me off the Tap immediately. Never found out if I was allergic to the drug. I had RAI….It wasn’t that bad.
    Good Luck

Okay, I’ve been on Tapazole for almost 3 weeks now. Today I think that I have broken out in hives. I itch everywhere, from head to toe. There’s all these little blotches on me that I noticed tonight when I got home from work. I’m gonna call the Doc in the morning and my mother advised that I stop taking the meds. Anybody else been through the same thing? Then what happened? My chest hurts too. Side effect or no?
