    Ann,
While I was pregnant I was taking propranolol and during a relatively short period of time tiamazol. My daughter was born healthy and hasn’t had any thyroid problems so far. She is two years old now. I know it’s a little bit different situation but if you would like to ask me any questions, please, do not hesitate to email me.

Like many others on this BB, I was diagnosed with Graves just when my husband and I wanted to start a family. I’m now on a fairly low dose of PTU (100mg per day) and my endo says I have a 50% chance of eventually going into remission. I’ve talked to my endo and OB about trying to conceive while on PTU. My endo said pregnancy while on PTU is doable but complex; my OB said “absolutely not” — but she was fairly unfamiliar with Graves treatments. While I feel like I now understand the medical risks involved, I feel like a human perspective is missing. I’d like to hear other people’s stories about having a baby while on PTU. Did your endo/OB encourage/discourage you? Did the baby have any complications? Did you have any complications? How is the baby doing now? Do you have any regrets? I would appreciate your responses!

I was diagnosed with GD in May of 1997 and put on PTU. My endo told me at that he was prescribing PTU because it was a safe medication for women still in their child bearing years. On Aug. 27, 1997 I found out I was pregnant. My GYN and endo doctors worked together in monitoring our situation and I delivered a healthy baby girl on April 15, 1998. The doctors kept a close watch on my thyroid levels, checking them every month and adjusting the PTU accordingly. Your doctors will probably need to do the same. Many women have healthy babies while being treated for GD with PTU. I hope this helps you some.

I am currently pregnant and taking 50mg PTU per day. My latest tsh level was low – .362. My endo wants to wait to adjust, but I have a history of miscarriage with Graves and am concerned about this decision. Anyone have any data on what tsh levels should be during pregnancy? My T4F is in the normal range. Thanks

I can tell you about my sitch 3 yrs ago. I was diagnosed with graves early in my 2nd trimester with a tsh level of <.06 and freeT3 of 236. The doc's put me on 5mg TAP and retested each week with my freeT3 level going down to 205 within 25 days. They switched me to 150mg of ptu and within two weeks labs showed tsh at <.06 and free t3 at 186. The next week my tsh was <.1 and they started tracking my ft4 levels at 1.1. I stayed at these levels until three days before my son was born when my labs showed tsh at 0.3 and ft4 at .96 They dropped my ptu dose to 50mg/day until I weened my son 6mo later, my labs looked as follows during this time: (TSH)0.2,0.3,<.1,<.1 and (ft4) .93,.98, 1.43, 1.44. Then the doc changed my meds back to Tap until my labs went below normal(hypo) and then added levothyroxine. Hope this helps!

I know how important it is to you that things go well with this pregnancy. But please, if you need a second opinion because you’re feeling insecure, get one from a real doctor, in real time, and not online. Even a real doc online will not be able to give you the same quality advice he could give you after seeing you, and examining you and your lab work.

I wish you wonderful luck with the baby,

I want to apologize for my last post. I had no intent to recommend a treatment by posting details about how I was treated. However, I believe that by my reading and research on the subject has empowered me to ask right questions about my care and how I am feeling with my doc. A little knowlege can be a dangerous thing, but it can also improve our care!

    Hello
I recieved RI in January 2001. Althought every thing looked normal in March my June check up showed a strong comeback of the Thyroid. I have been placed on PTU once a day. The best news came when I found out I am pregnant. Has any one had this type of response to RI and is it safe to be on PTU while pregnant??
    Any info will be helpful.
    Joann
