I had a skin biopsy done for what turned out to be pseudoporphyria cutaneq tarda from NSAID’s, and, while it left a tiny scar, was no big deal, didn’t hurt or anything more than the blisters I had already. They do special stains and can tell what is going on at a cellular level. I am not educated on the cellular effects from myxedma, but know that we use it to confirm skin disorders that we see at the burn unit I work at, and it is a good way to confirm what appears to be going on. I would ask how many case like yours they have seen at your dermatology clinic, I was astounded at the lack of awareness of thyroid effects on skin and nails at my supposedly world class center, (my thryoid specialist was dumbfounded, also) and had to do my own research and bring in possible drug causes for my very icky skin sloughing, which is thankfully a thing of the past, now!
MagI have had pretibial myxedema since the summer, and while some of it has healed with the creams from my dr, there is a new and icky outbreak .I might need a biopsy when I see my dermatologist this afternoon and I am wondering if anyone has had one or knows what’s involved. Plus, is it really helpful to do when there is little if any doubt as to what it is? You know what? I am really getting tired of this GD. Thanks.
Best wishes to all,
Linc
P.S. did a search, not too much on this topicHi Linc:
I’ve had pretibial myxodema for about 6 years now. Spots of it come and go…how much fun can one person stand? Anyway, several years ago I had my lumps biopsied…one from each leg. They were perfectly symetrical, those lumps of mine! Anyway, they gave me an injection of some sort of numbing medication, made a small incision which required 1 stitch and took a tissue sample. The whole ordeal lasted about ten minutes in the doctor’s office. Of course, I distinctly remember thinking that the doctor could have stood to wait a few more minutes before making the incision…give that numbing stuff more time to work. So, in a nutshell, it wasn’t any fun, but I’ve been through worse. At least it was quick!
Hope this helps!
