Thank you for commenting that you have pressure behind your eyes when you get stressed. I am in my 6th year and I will still have the same thing when I get stressed. I am sorry to know you have it too, but am glad to know I am not imagining it. Thanks!

I have been on the medication for about 3 weeks now to treat the thyroid but haven’t yet been to the eye doctor for two more weeks.

Is there any chance that the eyes do get better? Has anyone gotten better? I just don’t want to have my hopes up, if it really isn’t possible.

    Hi Bawsten,

There is a chance that your eyes will improve, but it probably won’t have anything to do with treating your thyroid. The two conditions are related, yet separate. Different antibodies cause each condition. There are a few eye symptoms that can be caused by hyperthyroidism, but the only one I’m sure of is if your eyelid is in constant spasm, then it will be artificially open too wide. Reducing your thyroid hormone levels can correct that. The other eye symptoms (swelling of the eye muscles within the orbital cavity) are completely independent of the thyroid condition, and treating the thyroid will have no effect on the eyes.

STILL, take heart. Most people with the eye disease do not get it in its worst form, and the “hot phase” of symptoms does go away. The time it takes to go away can seem long, but take heart that the hot phase WILL end, and even if you experience very severe symptoms, there are treatment options after the hot phase is over. Staying in touch with your opthalmologist (not optician, not optometrist) is key, even if it’s a waiting game. It’s good to have someone measuring, monitoring and suggesting possible treatments or strategies to minimize discomfort.

My daughter had RAI and it didn’t work now her eyes are so bad she can’t drive or even walk well, also this causes extreme headaches. Any suggestions? She will have surgery to remove thyroid in about 2 weeks. will it be a rapid change…God I hope so. We have been fighting this for three years.
