Happy New Year to All,
On January 8, 2008, I’ll be having a thyroidectomy as this was recommended by a board of Endocrinologists when my Endo MD presented my case, which he felt was unusual because of my severe TED, my age of 66, etc. I’ve decided to go through with the procedure despite my fears, etc. I was advised to take 5 drops of a strong Iodine solution 3 times a day (diluted in juice or water) to minimize the chance of bleeding postop. I’m only taking 2 drops three times a day to be sure I don’t react to it, as I did react to an iodine prep in the past, but that was given IV during a CT scan. I was just wondering if anyone who has gone through this surgery has any advice for me. I have confidence in the surgeon and feel I’ll be in good hands, but I’m still not convinced that I’ll be able to go home the next day. I’m also wondering how my body will adjust to suddenly becoming hypothyroid. Any tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks much, NinaDear Nina,
Everyone’s surgery is a bit different. I had a huge Goiter that needed removed so I was in the hospital a lot longer then a day. But the surgery itself went as smooth as possible. I couldn’t have been more blessed with a great surgeon and hospital staff. Just make sure you ask lots of questions before they take you down to surgery. They will be more then happy to answer any and all of them. Don’t worry Nina, I’m sure you will come through this with flying colors. You can barely see my scar now and it’s been since June. I’ve had NO complications from it at all. Good Luck and God Bless.
DianeNina, I was going to wish you all the best on your thyroidectomy, and realized it’s scheduled for today and is probably all over with now as I write this.
I hope when you read this you are recovering nicely and that your operation went without a hitch. Please post as soon as you can and let us know how it went for you!
And Happy New Year to all!
